Cleaning a Goodman wall-mounted heat pump in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

A neglected outdoor unit regains its full efficiency

At AirGreen , we were recently called upon to perform a thorough cleaning of a Goodman wall-mounted heat pump installed in a semi-enclosed space under a wooden structure in the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie neighbourhood of Montreal . The unit, although protected from direct weather conditions, suffered from advanced soiling due to humidity, urban dust, and a lack of regular maintenance .

The customer contacted us after noticing that their heat pump was taking much longer to heat and cool the air, while also producing an unusual fan noise . Clear signs that a thorough cleaning was necessary.

Initial state: widespread fouling

Upon our arrival, the diagnosis was obvious:

  • Accumulation of dust, dirt and organic debris (leaves, dried mud) on the base and ventilation grille.

  • The condenser fins and coil are clogged , limiting heat dissipation.

  • Presence of black spots on the lower casing, a sign of stagnant moisture.

  • Slight corrosion at the level of the fixing screws and the fan housing.

This type of dirt, accumulated over several months, prevents proper heat exchange and increases energy consumption by 10 to 25% .

The AirGreen cleaning process step by step

To restore the unit's performance, our team followed a rigorous protocol, adapted to the specific characteristics of Goodman models.

1. Securing and preparing for the intervention

We started by cutting off the power at the wall-mounted service box. Next, we cleared the work area by sweeping leaves and dust from the ground, then installed a plastic sheet to prevent any splashes on the brick wall and the dirt floor.

2. Mechanical disassembly and cleaning

  • Removal of the front panel and fan grille.

  • Thorough vacuuming of ingrained dirt using an industrial vacuum cleaner equipped with a soft brush.

  • Clean the fan with a damp cloth and a biodegradable product.

  • Gently brush the fins to remove dried mud without twisting them.

This first step has made it possible to remove more than 80% of the visible deposits.

3. Water washing and eco-friendly degreasing

We then carried out a low-pressure wash combined with a non-corrosive cleaning product , specially designed for aluminum coils.
The mixture was applied evenly, left to act for a few minutes, then rinsed with clean water.
This treatment restored the thermal conductivity of the coil and eliminated deposits stuck in hard-to-reach areas.

4. Checks and adjustments

Once the cleaning is complete, we have:

  • Inspected the refrigeration line and the condensation drain , with no apparent leaks.

  • Tightened the slightly corroded screws .

  • Cleaned the outer casing with a microfiber cloth and an eco-friendly disinfectant.

  • Restarted the heat pump to test the airflow, pressure and outlet temperature .

Results observed after the interview

The results were immediate:

  • Noise reduced by half , a sign of a balanced and clean fan.

  • Cooler and more consistent air from the first minutes of operation.

  • Reduction in electrical consumption , confirmed by the stabilization of the current measured with the ammeter clamp.

  • Aesthetically, the machine has regained a clean and professional appearance , without visible stains or deposits.

The customer, amazed by the difference, even mentioned that his system looked “like new” after our visit.

Why an annual review is essential

A heat pump installed in a semi-open space like this is subjected to a double stress :

  • Stagnant air promotes the accumulation of dust and moisture .

  • The lack of external circulation prevents natural self-cleaning by wind and rain.

Without annual maintenance, performance drops, and dirt can:

  • To obstruct the fins,

  • Clog the fan

  • Promote premature corrosion,

  • And eventually, cause the compressor to fail .
