A winter intervention essential to preserve performance
At AirGreen , we know that Quebec winters put heating systems to the test. During our recent visit to Sainte-Dorothée (Laval) , we were called in for a complete cleaning of a Mitsubishi wall-mounted heat pump installed on the exterior wall of a single-family home. Despite this brand's reputation for reliability, inadequate maintenance and harsh weather conditions can seriously reduce the performance of a unit.
Context and initial state
Upon our arrival, the outdoor heat pump was covered with a thin layer of snow and dirt , the result of a gradual accumulation since the beginning of the cold season. The fins of the outdoor unit were partially obstructed by plant debris and dust, while the fan showed signs of minor imbalance caused by the accumulated dirt.
The customer had noticed that the heating efficiency had decreased , and that the unit seemed to have to work harder to maintain the desired temperature. This was easily explained: an accumulation of dust and frost on the fins reduces heat exchange capacity and increases electricity consumption.
Diagnosis and preparation for cleaning
Before any intervention, our RBQ-certified technician disconnected the appliance's power supply to ensure complete safety. We then performed a thorough visual inspection :
-
Checking the cleanliness of the fins and the fan.
-
Assessment of clearance around the unit (branches, walls, various objects).
-
Defrost drain flow control.
-
Observation of the presence of moisture and organic debris on top of the unit.
A manual sweep was first used to remove dead leaves and accumulated dust, before the deep cleaning began.
The AirGreen cleaning process
The cleaning process took place in several specific stages:
1. Clearance and protection
We carefully cleared the snow from the top of the heat pump to prevent meltwater from seeping into the electrical components. The surrounding walls were protected with waterproof tarps to prevent water from splashing onto the electrical outlets.
2. Cleaning the fins and the fan
Using a low-pressure water jet and a biodegradable cleaning product , we washed the external fins and fan blades. This environmentally friendly process removes grease, dust, and microorganisms without damaging the aluminum of the fins.
3. Rinsing and sanitizing
Once the main surfaces were cleaned, we rinsed the entire outdoor unit with warm water to remove any detergent residue. Then, a chlorine-free antibacterial solution was applied to prevent mold growth and prolong the system's cleanliness.
4. Check the drain and defrosting system
The defrost drain was cleared and tested to ensure it was properly draining the melted water. This step is crucial: a blocked drain can cause repeated freezing and damage the compressor.
5. Restart and performance check
After complete drying, the unit was switched back on. Our tests confirmed an immediate return to optimal performance : the airflow was stronger, the temperature more stable, and the operating noise reduced.
Results and benefits for the client
Following the cleaning, the Mitsubishi heat pump has regained:
-
Increased energy efficiency , reducing electricity consumption.
-
Better air quality , without dust or musty odors.
-
Quieter operation thanks to a balanced fan.
-
Extended lifespan of dirt-sensitive components.
The customer noted the very next day that the indoor temperature quickly reached the desired comfort level, without fluctuations like before.
