Cleaning a Sanyo wall-mounted heat pump in Sainte-Julie

A dirty outdoor unit regaining its full efficiency

At AirGreen , we perform HVAC system cleaning services daily throughout the greater Montreal area. This time, our team traveled to Sainte-Julie , on the South Shore , for a complete service of a Sanyo wall-mounted heat pump installed on a balcony. The client had noticed a decrease in heating performance during the winter and noisy ventilation when switching to cooling mode.

At first glance, the outdoor unit showed traces of dust, dirt, and grease deposits on the cover and condenser fins. Although the motor was still running, this buildup was clearly hindering airflow and heat dissipation.

Initial diagnosis: dirt and obstruction of the fins

Outdoor units of wall-mounted heat pumps are often exposed to dust, leaves, pollen, and fine particles from urban or semi-urban environments.
In this specific case:

  • The condenser fins were covered with a thin grey layer.

  • An accumulation of dirt around the fan was reducing its efficiency.

  • The compressor housing showed signs of oily deposits due to condensation.

  • The fan noise was slightly irregular due to the imbalance caused by the dust.

These conditions not only cause a loss of energy efficiency , but also an increase in electricity consumption and premature wear of components.

The AirGreen cleaning process

1. Preparation and thorough inspection

Before any intervention, we disconnected the power supply and checked the power cable connections. A quick inspection of the service panel and refrigerant lines confirmed the absence of leaks.

2. Cleaning the hood and chassis

Using a microfiber cloth and a biodegradable, pH-neutral product, we degreased and cleaned the external surface of the heat pump. This step not only improves its appearance but also its corrosion protection.

3. Degreasing and washing the condenser

The condenser's metal fins were treated with an environmentally friendly foaming cleaner , applied under low pressure to avoid deforming the metal. After a few minutes, a gentle rinse with a jet of water removed the dirt embedded between the fins.
Result: optimal heat exchange and restored airflow.

4. Cleaning the fan and condensation tray

We then cleaned the axial fan , which is often clogged with dust and insects, and emptied the condensation tray . A light antibacterial treatment was applied to prevent mold growth.

5. Functionality check

After complete drying and reconnection to the power supply, the Sanyo heat pump was tested in both cooling and heating modes. The operating noise was significantly reduced , and the expelled airflow proved to be much more powerful and consistent.

Results obtained and recommendations

The customer immediately noticed:

  • A reduction in noise outside.

  • Faster cooling of interior rooms.

  • Stabilized energy consumption .

Our technicians recommended a complete cleaning twice a year — in spring and fall — to prevent buildup and preserve performance season after season.
