Cleaning a Sanyo heat pump in Saint-Laurent

Revitalizing and improving the efficiency of a rooftop installation

At AirGreen , we work weekly in various sectors of the greater Montreal area, providing professional cleaning services for wall-mounted and central heat pumps . One of our recent projects took us to Saint-Laurent , where an institutional client contacted us to revitalize a Sanyo heat pump installed on the roof of a brick building. Exposed to the elements, this outdoor unit was showing clear signs of soiling and reduced efficiency.

Initial diagnosis: a heat pump worn out by exposure

Upon our arrival, we noticed several classic symptoms of a lack of maintenance:

  • Dust and debris accumulated on the front grille and condenser fins.

  • Traces of moss and dirt on the base, typical of a humid environment on a flat roof.

  • Light mechanical noises , caused by partial obstruction of the airflow.

  • The customer has been reporting reduced cooling performance for several weeks.

These indicators confirm what we often observe: even a properly installed heat pump loses efficiency when exposed without regular cleaning.

Step 1 – Safe site preparation

As always, our team began by securing the work area :

  • Power outage.

  • Checking the stability of the unit on its supports.

  • Protection of refrigeration wiring and connections.

Special attention is paid to the roof units: a wrong move can damage the condensation line or create a water leak.

Step 2 – Deep cleaning of the outdoor condenser

We removed the front cover of the heat pump to access the fan and coils. Using AirGreen ProClean biodegradable cleaning product , formulated to dissolve grease and dust without damaging metals, we:

  • Sprayed the solution over all the fins.

  • Leave it to act for a few minutes to loosen the deposits.

  • Rinsed at low pressure to avoid bending the thin fins of the condenser.

The fan was then manually cleaned to remove the micro-particles accumulated on the blades, which were responsible for vibrations and noise.

Step 3 – Checking the drain and condensation pipes

On rooftop installations, water drainage systems are often clogged with dust and moss. Therefore, we have:

  • Unblocked the main drain .

  • Cleaned the collection tray with a mixture of warm water and antibacterial solution.

  • A preventative antifungal treatment was applied to avoid unpleasant odors associated with stagnant water.

Step 4 – Cleaning the indoor units

The client had two indoor wall units connected to the Sanyo outdoor unit. We carried out a complete cleaning:

  • Removal and washing of air filters .

  • Gentle suction of the evaporator fins .

  • Application of an environmentally friendly disinfectant to eliminate microscopic bacteria and mold.

The result: cleaner indoor air and better airflow in every room.

Step 5 – Final tests and checks

After the complete reassembly of the system, we have:

  • I turned the heat pump back on.

  • Checked the refrigerant pressure and the blowing temperature.

  • Confirmed: sound stability and absence of vibrations.

The customer immediately noticed an improvement in comfort and quieter operation.

Results and benefits of cleaning

At the end of the intervention, the Sanyo heat pump was restored to:

  • Optimal energy performance , reducing electricity consumption.

  • A smooth and even flow of air .

  • Healthier indoor air , without any trace of humidity or odor.

  • Extended lifespan , thanks to preventative maintenance.

This type of regular maintenance, recommended once a year , is essential to protect your investment and ensure the lasting comfort of your occupants.
