A complete intervention to bring an IGFU outdoor unit back to life
At AirGreen , we know that a well-maintained outdoor unit for a wall-mounted air conditioner is essential to the proper functioning of a complete HVAC system. Recently, our team traveled to Pointe-Claire , on Montreal's West Shore , to perform a complete cleaning of an IGFU unit installed on the balcony of a residential building.
Initial observation: a dirty and less efficient unit
During our inspection, we noticed several typical signs of fouling:
-
Accumulation of dust and debris on the fan grille and the heat exchanger fins.
-
Minor traces of oxidation on the metal casing, due to outdoor exposure.
-
Noticeable reduction in airflow , resulting in noisier operation and a loss of energy efficiency.
The customer reported that the heat pump was having difficulty maintaining a stable temperature, especially on hot days. These symptoms are often a sign of heat exchange obstructed by dirt and dust.
Cleaning steps performed by AirGreen
Our team applied a complete professional cleaning protocol, in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and HVAC safety standards:
1. Inspection and preparation
We first checked the overall condition of the unit, the refrigerant connections, and the condensation drain. The unit was switched off to ensure a safe intervention.
2. Partial disassembly
We removed the side panels to gain direct access to the heat exchanger and fan turbine. This step is crucial for a thorough cleaning, as dirt often accumulates in areas invisible to the naked eye.
3. Cleaning the fins and the fan
Using a pressure-controlled water jet and a specialized biodegradable product , we carefully cleaned the condenser fins. The fan was also washed to remove dust and grease deposits.
4. Degreasing of the casing and antibacterial treatment
The exterior of the unit was degreased and then treated with an antibacterial product to prevent mold growth and improve air quality.
5. Final verification and performance testing
After complete drying, we plugged the device back in for a performance test. Result: significantly improved airflow , quieter operation and better energy efficiency .
Results obtained
At the end of the procedure:
-
The IGFU unit operated smoothly and stably .
-
The fan noise has decreased considerably.
-
The customer noted an immediate improvement in interior comfort .
Why is it important to regularly maintain your outdoor unit?
A dirty outdoor unit forces the compressor to work harder, which:
-
increases electricity consumption ;
-
reduces the compressor's lifespan ;
-
promotes premature breakdowns ;
-
decreases the system's cooling capacity .
At AirGreen, we recommend annual professional cleaning to ensure the performance, longevity and cleanliness of your HVAC systems, especially after winter when dust and pollen deposits accumulate.
