Giving a second life to a dirty and oxidized outdoor unit
At AirGreen , we regularly work in LaSalle , in southwest Montreal, performing complete cleaning of HVAC systems . This project involved an outdoor wall-mounted heat pump unit installed on the balcony of a residential building, heavily exposed to the elements.
Initial state: corrosion and accumulated dirt
A visual inspection immediately revealed:
-
advanced oxidation on the upper hood and side panels;
-
dusty and partially obstructed cables and sheaths ;
-
an accumulation of fine particles and debris around the refrigeration fittings;
-
clogged fins , limiting airflow.
The customer reported an unusual noise and a noticeable loss of efficiency in air conditioning mode. These signs indicated that the condenser was suffocating, forcing the compressor to work harder to maintain the desired temperature.
Our complete cleaning process
1. Securing and preliminary diagnosis
We first disconnected the power supply and carried out a complete inspection of the structure: wall bracket, protective box, wiring, and conduits. The extent of corrosion required a meticulous approach to avoid further damage to the components.
2. Mechanical cleaning and deoxidation
Using soft brushes and a neutralizing cleaner , we removed the accumulated rust and dirt deposits from the metal surface. This step improves heat dissipation and extends the bodywork's lifespan.
3. Washing the condenser fins
We applied an environmentally friendly, low-pH degreaser to dissolve grease deposits and embedded dust between the fins, followed by a low-pressure water jet rinse to avoid deforming them.
4. Cleaning and securing the wiring
The cables were wiped clean and repositioned to avoid prolonged contact with rusted areas. We also checked the electrical connectors and applied a protective anti-corrosion treatment .
5. Final test and functional inspection
Once the drying process was complete, we restored the power supply for a performance test . The operating noise was significantly reduced, and the heat pump regained its original cooling capacity.
Result: restored effectiveness and prolonged durability
After the procedure:
-
The ventilation has become smooth and quiet again;
-
the refrigerant pressure has stabilized at an optimal level;
-
The unit has regained a clean and healthy appearance , ready to face the summer season.
The customer immediately noticed improved energy performance , a sign that the system was breathing properly again.
Why preventative maintenance is essential
An outdoor unit, especially when installed in an exposed urban environment like LaSalle, quickly accumulates dust, rust, and contaminants. Maintenance-free:
-
electricity consumption is increasing ;
-
the compressor's lifespan decreases ;
-
Indoor air quality is deteriorating .
That's why we recommend a complete annual cleaning of the outdoor and indoor units. This preventative measure not only reduces costly breakdowns but also ensures efficient and quiet air conditioning.
