Cleaning of an outdoor wall-mounted heat pump unit in Plateau-Mont-Royal

An essential intervention for an outdoor unit exposed to the elements.

At AirGreen , we recently completed a full cleaning of an outdoor wall-mounted heat pump unit installed on the brick facade of a building in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood of Montreal. The equipment, mounted high up under a small metal canopy, showed visible signs of corrosion, dust, and urban grime caused by constant exposure to rain, pollution, and temperature fluctuations.

Initial observation: ingrained dirt and superficial rust

During our inspection, we noted several problems typical of an urban outdoor device:

  • Significant accumulation of dust and debris on the condenser coil;

  • Presence of rust on the metal base and around the electrical box;

  • Obstructed heat exchanger fins , reducing airflow and increasing compressor pressure;

  • Vibration noises indicating a possible accumulation of dirt on the fan.

Although the unit was still functioning, it was consuming more energy to maintain the indoor temperature, a clear sign of loss of thermal efficiency .

Technical cleaning and performance restoration

Our AirGreen team undertook a complete cleaning and maintenance procedure for the outdoor unit , respecting the necessary safety protocols for working at height:

  1. Power off and secure the installation
    Before any handling, we cut off the power supply and secured access to the terrace to prevent any risk of shock or falling equipment.

  2. Cleaning the fins and the coil
    Using a low-pressure jet and a biodegradable cleaning solution , we removed the ingrained dust between the fins. This gentle cleaning restores optimal heat exchange without damaging the aluminum fins.

  3. Degreasing the fan and chassis
    The fan, often exposed to urban soot, was thoroughly cleaned and rinsed. We also applied a rust-preventative treatment to the oxidized areas to slow down corrosion and extend the structure's lifespan.

  4. Cleaning the electrical box and checking the connections
    A slight deposit of moisture had begun to accumulate around the control box. After it dried completely, we inspected the electrical connections to ensure safe and lasting insulation .

  5. Final rinse and performance test
    Once everything was perfectly clean, we switched the unit back on. The airflow was measured and found to be significantly improved , with the discharge temperature having become stable and constant again.

Results: restored efficiency and reduced energy consumption

After the cleaning, the benefits were immediate:

  • Improvement in energy efficiency of nearly 15%;

  • Reduction of operating noise related to ventilation;

  • Disappearance of compressor overheating;

  • The overall appearance of the unit has been greatly improved, also contributing to the aesthetic value of the building .

The client, a co-owner concerned about maintaining his HVAC system, appreciated the speed and cleanliness of our intervention, carried out without disturbing the neighbors or damaging the surrounding brickwork.

Why maintain your outdoor heat pump unit?

In Montreal, outdoor units are subjected to significant climatic stresses: pollution, dust, acid rain, frost, and freeze-thaw cycles . Without regular cleaning:

  • Energy efficiency gradually decreases ;

  • The compressor works harder , leading to premature wear;

  • Corrosion progresses rapidly on the metal parts;

  • And the noise increases , harming comfort.

At AirGreen, we recommend a complete professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months , particularly for urban or exposed facade installations.
