A custom ventilation installation to improve quality of life
At AirGreen, every ventilation system installation project is more than just a technical task. It’s a real opportunity to transform our clients’ daily lives. That’s exactly what happened during our recent intervention on the South Shore of Montreal, where we supported a family whose youngest child suffered from chronic asthma worsened by poor indoor air quality.
Our mission? To provide a high-performance, tailored ventilation solution capable of significantly improving the family’s respiratory health while delivering year-round comfort.
Context: a household facing serious respiratory challenges
This family lives in a single-family home located in Saint-Lambert, on the South Shore. Their daily life was marked by frequent allergy episodes, nighttime coughing fits, and hospital visits linked to their 8-year-old son’s asthma.
Despite using portable air purifiers, the issue persisted: outside air infiltration, dust buildup, excessive humidity, and poor air circulation. That’s when they turned to AirGreen for a comprehensive evaluation of their home ventilation system.
Initial diagnosis: insufficient ventilation and outdated HRV system
After a full assessment carried out by our certified technicians, we identified several key issues:
-
An outdated central ventilation system, installed over 20 years ago
-
A first-generation HRV (heat recovery ventilator) that was both ineffective and noisy
-
A lack of humidity control, worsening respiratory symptoms
-
Ducts partially obstructed by dust and allergens
We proposed a complete and customized solution focused on improving indoor air quality, energy recovery, and reducing allergenic particles.
AirGreen solution: a high-efficiency ventilation system tailored to medical needs
We chose to install a controlled-flow central ventilation system with a Venmar AVS® N Series air exchanger, featuring the following specifications:
-
High-efficiency heat recovery ventilator (HRV) certified by HVI
-
110 CFM capacity, ideal for the home’s surface area (about 1,800 sq. ft.)
-
Integrated HEPA filters capturing 99.97% of particles over 0.3 microns
-
Intelligent humidity sensor and automated control
-
Ultra-quiet ECM motor fans
-
Compatible with their existing Ecobee smart thermostat
The installation was completed over two days, including a full duct cleaning, grille replacements, and complete system startup and calibration.
Challenges encountered during the installation
We faced several technical challenges on this project:
-
Difficult access to the crawl space, requiring custom adjustments for duct routing
-
Insulation of the hot air ducts needed improvement to prevent heat loss in certain areas
-
Fine calibration of airflow rates to ensure the intake of fresh air met the recommendations provided by the child’s pulmonologist
Our team successfully adapted the technical solutions on the fly, while minimizing disruption to the family’s daily life during the work.
Measurable results: a clear improvement in quality of life
Less than two weeks after the installation, the family reached out to share the changes:
-
Significant decrease in the child’s respiratory symptoms: fewer coughing fits, better sleep quality, reduced medication use
-
Overall indoor comfort greatly improved, both summer and winter
-
No more condensation on windows in winter, a sign of better humidity control
-
Noticeable reduction in visible dust throughout the living areas
They also noted optimized energy consumption, thanks to the HRV’s heat recovery function.
Available grants for this type of installation on the South Shore
This Venmar AVS® HRV installation qualifies for the Rénoclimat program, allowing the family to receive up to $650 in provincial subsidies.
On top of that, we supported the family through all administrative procedures, from energy evaluation to the submission of required documentation.

Practical tips: what every family should know
-
A poorly maintained ventilation system can become a hotbed for allergens and compromise your health
-
Adding HEPA filters is essential if you have asthmatic children or anyone sensitive to air quality
-
It’s recommended to have your ventilation system inspected every 3 to 5 years
-
Precise airflow calibration is key: too much fresh air can dry out the air, too little creates a stuffy environment
Customer testimonial
“Before AirGreen’s intervention, our son would have frequent asthma attacks, especially at night. Since the new system was installed, his condition has drastically improved. It’s the first time in years we’re living normally. Thank you!”
