A Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700 wall-mounted heat pump must not simply be connected, powered, and turned on. Fujitsu presents R-32 with a global warming potential of 675, compared with 2,088 for R-410A, representing an announced GWP reduction of 68% in its documentation.

This refrigerant change is important for the HVAC industry.

For our technicians, this also means that work methods must match the refrigerant and equipment generation installed. Connections, circuit checks, evacuation, and commissioning must be carried out using the appropriate equipment and procedures.

Two capacities available in the Altair 700 range

Fujitsu’s technical documentation presents two versions of this series:

09KMAS1

  • indoor unit: ASUH09KMAS;
  • outdoor unit: AOUH09KMAS1;
  • rated cooling capacity: 9,000 BTU/h;
  • rated heating capacity: 12,000 BTU/h.

12KMAS1

  • indoor unit: ASUH12KMAS;
  • outdoor unit: AOUH12KMAS1;
  • rated cooling capacity: 12,000 BTU/h;
  • rated heating capacity: 14,000 BTU/h.

The photo from Sainte-Barbe confirms the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE series, but the detailed nameplate is not sufficiently legible to confidently assign either of these two capacities to the photographed system.

We prefer to retain this precision rather than turn an assumption into a technical specification.

An Inverter heat pump that modulates its capacity

One of the benefits of the Fujitsu Altair 700 is its Inverter technology.

The capacity is not limited to a single fixed value.

For the 9,000 BTU version, Fujitsu indicates a cooling range of 3,100 to 12,100 BTU/h and a heating range of 2,800 to 14,500 BTU/h.

For the 12,000 BTU version, modulation reaches:

  • 3,100 to 13,800 BTU/h in cooling mode;
  • 2,800 to 15,000 BTU/h in heating mode.

This modulation allows the system to adapt its operation more closely to the needs of the served zone.

When a room approaches its target temperature, the system can reduce its capacity rather than operating continuously according to a full-power on-off cycle.

For the homeowner, this generally contributes to more consistent comfort and quieter operation.

High efficiency ratings

The Fujitsu technical data sheet indicates a TRÈS2 of 30.0 for the 09KMAS1 and 27.5 for the 12KMAS1.

The regional V CPSC2 is listed as:

  • 9,9 for the 9,000 BTU model;
  • 8,5 for the 12,000 BTU model.

Both configurations are also associated with the ENERGY STAR ratings presented in the manufacturer’s documentation.

A heat pump capable of operating at -15 °C does not automatically mean that it will cover 100% of the heating needs of any home at that temperature.

The load depends, among other things, on:

  • the actual area being served;
  • the level of insulation;
  • the windows;
  • the building's airtightness;
  • the home's orientation;
  • the layout of the rooms;
  • heat losses.

This is why HVAC sizing remains a fundamental step.

Exterior dimensions that facilitate certain residential installations

The outdoor unit in the series measures approximately:

  • 31 7/16 in. wide;
  • 21 5/16 in. high;
  • 11 7/16 in. deep.

Its weight is listed at approximately 71 lb.

Its relatively compact size is particularly relevant in a situation like Sainte-Barbe, where the unit must fit into an outdoor passage that already presents several constraints.

However, a compact machine must not be enclosed.

  • minimum length: 10 ft;
  • maximum length: 66 ft;
  • maximum vertical difference: 49 ft;
  • specified precharge for up to 49 ft of piping.

These limits provide some flexibility for connecting the indoor unit to the outdoor unit.

However, they do not justify an unnecessarily complex route.

In a residential project, we generally seek a solution that is technically compliant, protected, and discreet.

208 to 230 V and a 15 A circuit breaker

The Fujitsu specification sheet indicates a power supply of 208 to 230 V / 60 Hz / single-phase with a 15 A circuit breaker for both documented configurations.

The maximum heating current is listed as 9,4 A for both versions. In cooling, the maximum is 6,4 A for the 09KMAS1 and 6,9 A for the 12KMAS1.

The electrical verification must always be based on the exact model installed and its nameplate.

For us, this is something that should be addressed during project preparation, not after the equipment has been installed.

Indoor operation as low as 19 dB(A)

The outdoor section photographed in Sainte-Barbe tells only half the story of the system.

Indoors, Fujitsu states that sound levels can drop to just 19 dB(A) in quiet cooling mode, and 21 dB(A) in heating.

The fan has four speeds as well as an automatic mode.

Outdoor sound levels vary by capacity:

  • 09KMAS1 : 44 dB(A) in cooling / 47 dB(A) in heating;
  • 12KMAS1 : 48 dB(A) / 50 dB(A).

In an installation where the unit is relatively close to the house, this characteristic should be considered when choosing the location.

Integrated Wi-Fi and remote control

The Altair 700 series documentation also mentions integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, with remote monitoring through the AIRSTAGE mobile app.

For a homeowner, this feature can be used to:

  • change a setting without being in front of the unit;
  • adjust the heating before returning home;
  • control the air conditioning while away;
  • more easily manage a zone whose use varies throughout the day.

Fujitsu also offers several optional interfaces and controllers, including BACnet and Modbus integration options in certain configurations.

ProCore copper coils

On the indoor-unit side, the series uses ProCore coils, which Fujitsu describes as copper coils with high corrosion resistance.

The indoor unit also uses washable filters.

This highlights another important principle: even a highly efficient unit needs maintenance.

Dust-laden filters or an outdoor coil obstructed by debris can impair airflow and the unit’s normal operation.

The installation mistakes this reminds us to avoid

A job-site photo like this one may look simple, but it helps summarize several best practices.

In particular, we avoid:

  • to install a unit on an unstable base;
  • to neglect checking that it is level;
  • to crowd the unit with vegetation;
  • to place the service panel in an inaccessible area;
  • to use incorrect pipe dimensions;
  • to create tension in the lines;
  • to choose capacity based solely on floor area;
  • to neglect condensate water management;
  • to let shrubs gradually overgrow the coil;
  • to consider start-up as the only final check required.

A properly selected system can make better use of its modulation range, whereas a significantly oversized machine may not operate under the conditions in which it provides the best comfort.

Rebates: always verify the exact combination

Fujitsu documentation lists the 09KMAS1 and 12KMAS1 systems with several ENERGY STAR classifications, including a category associated with cold climates.

However, the exact indoor-outdoor combination, the references required by the program, and the eligibility conditions in effect at the time of the project must be verified.

We avoid announcing a fixed amount simply because a brochure bears the ENERGY STAR logo.
