Commercial indoor air quality: measured, corrected and compliant, all across Greater Montréal.

AirGreen, a Montréal-based HVAC company, makes businesses in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore healthier, safer and more productive. In Québec, every mechanical ventilation system must be inspected and adjusted at least once a year (RSST, s. 104).

01 · Understanding why indoor air quality matters

The air in your building affects three things: health, comfort and performance.

Dust, mould, allergens and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can cause allergies, asthma and more serious effects. They also weigh on staff performance, customer comfort and your operations. Pick a contaminant to see where it comes from and how we deal with it.

Health

Allergies, asthma, irritation: indoor air is a recognized factor in health.

Comfort

Dry air in winter, heavy air in summer, odours that linger: customers notice before you do.

Performance and operations

Fatigue, absences, complaints, inspections: neglected ventilation ends up costing you.

Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Where it comes from
People breathing: the more people, the higher it climbs.
Effect
Stuffy air, fatigue, poor focus: a sign of too little fresh air.
How we deal with it

03 · Indoor air quality assessment

Two readings tell you whether your air is working for you.

CO2 tells you whether fresh air is keeping up with the number of people. Temperature and humidity tell you whether the air is too dry in winter or too humid in summer. On site, we take these readings at busy hours.

04 · Fresh air needed

How much fresh air your space needs, in 10 seconds.

ASHRAE 62.1 adds two needs together: air per person and air per floor area. Choose your type of space and the math happens live.

Type of space

People estimated with the standard’s default density (5 per 1,000 sq. ft). Enter your actual number to refine.

Fresh air per person, at default density

A beauty salon needs four times the air per person of a meeting room. Tap a bar to use it in the calculation.

CFM per person = per-person rate + per-area rate ÷ default density (ASHRAE 62.1, Table 6-1).
05 · By business sector

A restaurant doesn’t breathe like an office.

Choose your sector: the rules, the typical issue and what we install appear, and the calculator above switches to your type of space.

Offices: meetings at 1,500 ppm and dry air in January.

A meeting room holds ten times more people per square foot than an open office, and winter dries out the whole floor.

The rules
  • S. 104Annual inspection and adjustment, filters included.
  • S. 119At least 20% humidity during business hours.
  • S. 111Washrooms vented outdoors, at least 350 m³/h.
The typical issue

CO2 climbs during meetings.

Fresh-air flow has to follow the real density of each room, not a floor average.

What we install
  • CO2 readings room by room, damper adjustment.
  • ERV to recover energy.
  • Humidifier on the ventilation system.

Commercial air quality: the answers managers ask for most.

    13 questions
What indoor air quality services do you offer businesses?

Indoor air quality assessment, air purification solutions (purifiers, air cleaners, filtration, UV systems), ventilation system design, installation and maintenance, humidity control, and regular maintenance and checks.

What rules govern ventilation in a Québec business?

The Regulation respecting occupational health and safety (RSST): adequate ventilation (s. 101), minimum fresh-air changes from Schedule III (s. 103), annual inspection (s. 104). The employer must comply with these standards (s. 4).

How often does ventilation need to be inspected?

At least once a year: every mechanical ventilation system must be inspected and adjusted, and filters maintained or replaced as needed (RSST, s. 104). We provide a dated report.

What CO2 level should an office aim for?

Health Canada recommends a long-term exposure limit of 1,000 ppm, averaged over 24 hours. CO2 is mainly an indicator: a high reading points to a lack of fresh air.

What is the minimum humidity in winter?

At least 20% during business hours in an office building or commercial establishment built or opened after December 19, 1979 (s. 119), measured with a psychrometer or hygrometer (s. 120).

And the maximum humidity in summer?

For air-conditioned spaces, ASHRAE 62.1 limits the indoor dew point to 15 °C. Above that, condensation and mould threaten ducts and ceilings.

How much fresh air does my space need?

ASHRAE 62.1 adds a per-person rate and a per-area rate. Example: a 5,000 sq. ft office with 25 people needs 425 CFM of outdoor air. Use the calculator for your own space.

Do ducts need to be cleaned every year?

No. According to the Québec government, duct cleaning isn’t governed by any regulated practice and is only needed when an inspection shows it is.

Does an air purifier replace ventilation?

No. Health Canada separates ventilating, which replaces indoor air with filtered outdoor air, from filtering. A purifier cleans the air in a room, it doesn’t bring in fresh air.

What should we do during a wildfire smoke episode?

Health Canada recommends MERV 13 or higher filters when the system can handle the pressure drop, and a system that can switch to recirculation.

Do you test for mould or asbestos?

That testing is done by an industrial hygienist or an accredited lab. A building constructed before February 15, 1990 must have been inspected for sprayed-on asbestos insulation (RSST, s. 69.3). We then fix the ventilation and humidity.

How much does an assessment cost?

The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. You see the price of the work before we start.

Which sectors and cities do you serve?

Offices, stores, restaurants, salons, schools and daycares, warehouses, everywhere in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.
