MembraneMembrane core: vacuum it, never wash it
The ERV core is polypropylene with a polymer membrane and aluminum covers, and it is not washable. At the yearly service, remove dust with a vacuum and soft brush; never soak it in water.

In hot weather the ERV core also exchanges moisture: HVI certifies a total recovery efficiency of 63% at 35 °C (51 cfm, 22 W). When the house is air-conditioned, incoming outdoor air arrives pre-cooled and less humid.

The only efficiency figure that matters for a Québec winter, and the one the Code uses. An efficiency quoted without its temperature means nothing; this one is measured at a test airflow of 66 cfm.
DamperIt defrosts without depressurizing the house
In cold weather, a motorized damper closes the outdoor air intake and recirculates indoor air through the core to thaw it. The house doesn't go into negative pressure during the cycle: no cold air drawn in through leaks, and none of the imbalance manufacturers warn about when there's a fireplace or a combustion appliance.
ERVIt moves moisture too, not just heat
An ERV transfers some moisture between the two airstreams. Useful in a house that gets too dry in winter or takes on a lot of humidity in summer. The trade-off: it generally recovers less heat than a comparable HRV.
