Heat pumpBehind a heat pump, it produces less
It evaporates water from a pad using the heat of the air coming off the furnace. A heat pump blows cooler air, so it evaporates less. With a heat pump, talk to our estimator: depending on the manufacturer, we connect it to hot water or suggest a steam model instead.

AprilAire 400: the bypass humidifier that doesn't need a drain
The AprilAire 400 mounts on the plenum of a forced-air furnace, with a bypass duct. It puts out 17 gal/day with 120 °F (49 °C) furnace air and covers up to 2,000 sq ft according to the manufacturer. It's the model we install when there's no drain within reach of the furnace.
Why the 400 rather than the 600
The two share the same cabinet, the same 10 × 12¾ in. plenum opening and the same 6 in. bypass duct. The difference is the water. The 400 takes in about 0.7 gal an hour and evaporates all of it, while a standard bypass model like the 600 takes in about 3 gal/h and sends the surplus down the drain. It comes with the AprilAire Model 60 automatic control and its outdoor sensor.
Upkeep and limits
The trade-off: the 400 uses two AprilAire #45 water panels, to be replaced at least twice per heating season, versus one change a year for the 600. Behind a heat pump, the furnace air is cooler and it produces less.
