Is it the right size for your home?
It puts 17 gallons of water a day into the air (with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air), enough to humidify up to 2,000 sq ft according to the manufacturer. Pick your home's living area.
It's the right size.
For a 900 to 1,500 sq ft house, it's within its range. It will run at part load on ordinary days and keep a reserve for the coldest days.
Area published by AprilAire for an average-construction home. For a very tight home, AprilAire advertises up to 5,000 sq ft. Older or leaky house: go one size up; our estimator confirms it on site.
What it does, in numbers
Output: manufacturer's spec (17 gal/day, with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air).
What you should know about this one
Published, verifiable figures, not brochure claims.
17 galWhat it produces per day, at full output
About 64 litres of water turned into humidity in 24 hours. The control runs it to match the humidity you set: it rarely runs flat out, except in very cold weather.
Heat pumpBehind a heat pump, it produces less
It evaporates water from a pad using the heat of the air coming off the furnace. A heat pump blows cooler air, so it evaporates less. With a heat pump, talk to our estimator: depending on the manufacturer, we connect it to hot water or suggest a steam model instead.
0.7 gal/hWhat it actually evaporates
It takes in about 3 gal of water an hour and evaporates 0.7. The rest rinses the pad and goes down the drain.
All inWhat's in the box

UpkeepWhat gets replaced, and when
AprilAire #35 water panel, replace at least once a year.
35%The humidity to aim for in winter, at most
At −7 °C, no more than 35%; at −18 °C, no more than 25%. Above that, the moisture condenses on the windows. The control adjusts for you if it has an outdoor sensor.

AprilAire 600: the mid-size bypass humidifier, shipped complete
The AprilAire 600 mounts on the plenum of a forced-air furnace and uses the furnace blower, through a bypass duct. It puts out 17 gal/day with 120 °F (49 °C) furnace air and suits a home of up to 2,000 sq ft according to the manufacturer.
What's in the box
The 600 comes with the AprilAire Model 60 digital control, its outdoor sensor, the #35 water panel, the 24 V transformer and the saddle valve. The Model 60 is automatic: it lowers the humidity setting as the cold deepens, to keep condensation off the windows. It's the middle size, between the 500 and the 700.
What it needs on site
Plan for a 10 × 12¾ in. opening in the plenum, a 6 in. round bypass duct, a water supply and a drain. The unit takes in about 3 gal of water an hour and evaporates 0.7; the rest rinses the pad and goes down the drain. With no drain nearby, the AprilAire 400 fits the same spot. Behind a heat pump, it produces less. The #35 pad is replaced at least once a year.
