GeneralAire GF1042DMD Humidifier | Installation in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore and North Shore
Is it the right size for your home?
It puts 17 gallons of water a day into the air (with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air), enough to humidify up to 1,500 sq ft according to the manufacturer. Pick your home's living area.
It's the right size.
For a condo or house under 900 sq ft, it's within its range. It will run at part load on ordinary days and keep a reserve for the coldest days.
Area published by GeneralAire for an average-construction home. For a very tight home, GeneralAire gives 2,800 sq ft. Older or leaky house: go one size up; our estimator confirms it on site.
What it does, in numbers
Output: manufacturer's spec (17 gal/day, with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air).
What you should know about this one
Published, verifiable figures, not brochure claims.
17 galWhat it produces per day, at full output
About 64 litres of water turned into humidity in 24 hours. The control runs it to match the humidity you set: it rarely runs flat out, except in very cold weather.
Heat pumpBehind a heat pump, it produces less
It evaporates water from a pad using the heat of the air coming off the furnace. A heat pump blows cooler air, so it evaporates less. With a heat pump, talk to our estimator: depending on the manufacturer, we connect it to hot water or suggest a steam model instead.
DMDSame unit as the DMM
The GF1042DMD and GF1042DMM are the same humidifier; only the control differs. The DMD comes with the GF-X3 digital humidistat.
6 in.Bypass duct
It mounts on the supply or return plenum, with a 13⅝ × 9½ in. opening and a 6 in. bypass duct.
Heat pumpGeneralAire advises against it with a heat pump
The manufacturer doesn't recommend this model with a heat pump. In that case, we suggest a steam model.
ControlThe control that comes with it
GeneralAire GF-X3 digital humidistat.
UpkeepWhat gets replaced, and when
GF-990-13 Vapor Pad, replace once or twice a season.
35%The humidity to aim for in winter, at most
At −7 °C, no more than 35%; at −18 °C, no more than 25%. Above that, the moisture condenses on the windows. The control adjusts for you if it has an outdoor sensor.
5 yearsThe parts warranty
Parts are covered for 5 years by the manufacturer. We register the warranty in your name at start-up.

GeneralAire GF1042DMD: the same 17 gal/day, with a digital humidistat
The GF1042DMD is the digital-control version of the GF1042. It's a bypass humidifier mounted on the furnace plenum that delivers 17 gal/day with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air. It suits a home of up to 1,500 sq ft according to the manufacturer.
DMD: the GF-X3 digital humidistat in the box
The cabinet, the pad and the output are the same as the GF1042DMM. The difference is the control. The DMD ships with the GF-X3 digital humidistat instead of the MHX3 manual dial. You set the humidity level on a display rather than a dial.
Installation and upkeep
We cut a 13⅝ × 9½ in. opening in the supply or return plenum, then connect the other plenum with a 6 in. bypass duct. It also needs a water line, a drain and a 24 V supply. The unit runs about 3.5 gal/h while it humidifies. Plan on a GF-990-13 pad once or twice a season. With a heat pump, GeneralAire advises against this model. We then point you to a steam unit.
