Is it the right size for your home?

It's the right size.
For a condo or house under 900 sq ft, it's within its range. It will run at part load on ordinary days and keep a reserve for the coldest days.
Area published by GeneralAire for an average-construction home. For a very tight home, GeneralAire gives 2,800 sq ft. Older or leaky house: go one size up; our estimator confirms it on site.
What it does, in numbers
Output: manufacturer's spec (17 gal/day, with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air).
What you should know about this one
Published, verifiable figures, not brochure claims.
17 galWhat it produces per day, at full output
About 64 litres of water turned into humidity in 24 hours. The control runs it to match the humidity you set: it rarely runs flat out, except in very cold weather.
Heat pumpBehind a heat pump, it produces less
It evaporates water from a pad using the heat of the air coming off the furnace. A heat pump blows cooler air, so it evaporates less. With a heat pump, talk to our estimator: depending on the manufacturer, we connect it to hot water or suggest a steam model instead.
DMMSame unit as the DMD
The GF1042DMM and GF1042DMD are the same humidifier; only the control differs. The DMM comes with the MHX3 manual humidistat.
6 in.Bypass duct
It mounts on the supply or return plenum, with a 13⅝ × 9½ in. opening and a 6 in. bypass duct.
Heat pumpGeneralAire advises against it with a heat pump
The manufacturer doesn't recommend this model with a heat pump. In that case, we suggest a steam model.
ControlThe control that comes with it
GeneralAire MHX3 manual humidistat.
UpkeepWhat gets replaced, and when
GF-990-13 Vapor Pad, replace once or twice a season.
35%The humidity to aim for in winter, at most
At −7 °C, no more than 35%; at −18 °C, no more than 25%. Above that, the moisture condenses on the windows. The control adjusts for you if it has an outdoor sensor.
5 yearsThe parts warranty
Parts are covered for 5 years by the manufacturer. We register the warranty in your name at start-up.

GeneralAire GF1042DMM: the bypass humidifier with a manual humidistat
The GF1042DMM is a bypass humidifier that mounts on the furnace plenum. Water runs over a pad and the warm air picks it up and carries it through the ducts. It delivers 17 gal/day with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air, for a home of up to 1,500 sq ft according to the manufacturer.
DMM: the manual-control version
The GF1042DMM and the GF1042DMD are the same humidifier. Only the control differs. The DMM comes with the MHX3 manual humidistat: a simple dial that you turn down yourself when the cold sets in. If you'd rather have a digital display, the GF1042DMD ships with the GF-X3 humidistat.
What it needs on site
It mounts on the supply or return plenum, with a 13⅝ × 9½ in. opening and a 6 in. bypass duct. It needs a water supply, a drain and 24 V for the solenoid valve. About 3.5 gal/h flows through it and the water that doesn't evaporate goes to the drain. The GF-990-13 pad is replaced once or twice a season. GeneralAire doesn't recommend this model with a heat pump. In that case, we suggest a steam model.
