A low-wall heat pump that completely changes the installation possibilities in a room that is difficult to cool
The 24,000 BTU SENVILLE SENA R454B floor console heat pump meets a need we regularly encounter in heating and cooling projects in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore: the room requires substantial capacity, but the ideal location for a traditional wall-mounted head simply does not exist.
The reasons can be very practical. A room may have windows that extend almost to the ceiling, a sloped wall, a large patio door, a cathedral ceiling, built-in cabinets, or architecture that makes a wall-mounted unit unattractive. In these situations, a floor console allows the indoor unit to be installed much lower on the wall, in a configuration that resembles a modern convector more than a conventional wall-mounted heat pump.

Senville’s documentation does indeed present the SENA/24HF/IF as a Floor Mounted mini-split heat pump, meaning an indoor unit installed at the bottom of the wall, providing heating and cooling.
A floor console is not simply a wall-mounted heat pump installed lower down
The difference is not limited to its appearance.
The indoor unit is specifically designed for low-wall installation. Its body measures approximately 42 inches wide, 26.57 inches high, and only 9.25 inches deep.
This design allows it to be integrated into locations where a traditional wall-mounted head would be poorly suited, including:
- under certain windows;
- on a low wall;
- in an attic room;
- in an area where the upper part of the walls must remain clear;
- in a basement;
- in a room with a very high ceiling;
- in a space where air distribution from the lower level is preferred.

A particularly interesting solution beneath a sloped ceiling
Let us consider a typical scenario.

The COP of 3.34 is measured under a reference condition. It does not mean that the heat pump maintains the same efficiency at -15 °C or -30 °C.
Performance at -8 °C is much more useful for evaluating a Montreal winter.
The AirGreen data sheet indicates the following for this configuration:
At -8 °C:

- COP: 2.74
This performance point is particularly relevant to the Greater Montreal climate.
A COP of 2.74 means that under this condition, the system transfers approximately 2.74 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed by the heat-pump cycle.
For a property heated primarily with electricity, this allows the heat pump to handle a significant share of the heating during a large part of the winter.
24,200 BTU at -15 °C according to the AirGreen configuration data
At -15 °C, the AirGreen data sheet indicates a capacity of 24,200 BTU/h.
This value is particularly interesting because it remains very close to the 24,000 BTU nominal class.
The Senville documentation provided does not include detailed capacity tables at -8 °C and -15 °C; however, it confirms that the system belongs to the cold-climate category and can operate in heating mode down to -30 °C.
When comparing this heat pump with another unit for a specific project, we therefore use the data for the exact match AHRI 215735310, rather than a simple nominal capacity indication.
At -30 °C: approximately 10,500 BTU and a COP of 1.33
The most useful figure for avoiding unrealistic expectations is the minimum temperature.
The SENVILLE can operate down to -30 °C, and the brochure confirms a minimum outdoor heating temperature of -22 °F / -30 °C.
At this temperature, AirGreen data indicates:
- capacity: approximately 10,500 BTU/h
- COP: 1.33
The difference between these two pieces of information is essential:
the heat pump still operates at -30 °C, but it no longer provides 24,000 BTU at that temperature.
This reality must be incorporated into the heating calculation.
In a room or zone whose heat losses exceed 10,500 BTU/h during extreme cold, another heat source must supplement the heat pump.
Why this capacity at -30 °C is still useful
A COP of 1,33 is still higher than a resistive electric heating system operating alone, which essentially converts one unit of electricity into one unit of heat.
The heat pump therefore continues to contribute to heating, even during extremely cold weather.
For an installation in Laval, Montreal, Longueuil, Terrebonne, Boucherville, or on the South Shore, this extends the period during which the compressor contributes to heating rather than leaving the entire load to baseboard heaters or a backup system.
The brochure gives 22,000 BTU for cooling and 26,000 BTU for heating.
One technical detail deserves explanation.
The AirGreen page presents the unit in the 24,000 BTU class, while the Senville technical table gives:
- cooling capacity: 22,000 BTU/h
- cooling range: 12,700 to 25,600 BTU/h
- heating capacity: 26,000 BTU/h
- heating range: 11,300 to 29,500 BTU/h.
This type of difference is normal in HVAC specifications.
“24,000 BTU” is a commercial capacity class, while certified capacities may differ depending on the operating mode and test conditions.
For proper sizing, we therefore never work solely with the figure stated in the product name.
Modulation reaching nearly 29,500 BTU in heating
The published range of up to 29,500 BTU/h in heating mode demonstrates the importance of inverter technology.
The heat pump can vary its output according to demand.
It is not limited to two states: off or 24,000 BTU.
When the load is low, it can reduce its output. When conditions require it, it can increase its capacity within the limits specified by the manufacturer.
This modulation can help:
- maintain a more stable temperature;
- reduce variations between cycles;
- limit certain repeated start-ups;
- adapt the heating to the room’s actual needs.
577 CFM maximum indoor airflow
The published airflow is:
- 576.8 CFM in Turbo mode
- 547.4 CFM at high speed
- 485.6 CFM at medium speed
- 420.8 CFM at low speed.
The 577 CFM value on the AirGreen specification sheet therefore corresponds to the unit’s maximum airflow.
This airflow is significant for a 24,000 BTU console, particularly when it has to serve a large open room.
Warm air rises from below: an interesting feature for heating
Heating from a low-mounted unit can be very comfortable.
Warm air naturally tends to rise. A floor console can therefore distribute heat from the lower part of the room rather than from the ceiling.
This can be particularly useful in:
- a living room with a cathedral ceiling;
- a large open room;
- a basement;
- a room with large glazed surfaces;
- a space where occupants remain seated for long periods.
The location must nevertheless be chosen carefully to avoid blowing air directly onto a sofa or workstation.

Indoor sound level: 34 to 51.5 dB depending on the speed
The brochure states:

- 49 dB at high speed
- 45 dB at medium speed
- 34 dB at low speed.
The 34 dB figure is useful during periods when the load is moderate.
However, values measured at equivalent speeds must be compared when evaluating two models. A unit rated at 34 dB at low speed should not be directly compared with another measured only in maximum mode.
Dehumidification: 2.73 L/h, or approximately 5.77 U.S. pints per hour
The AirGreen specification sheet indicates dehumidification of 5.77 pt/h.
The brochure indicates 2.73 L/h.
These two figures are consistent: 2.73 litres correspond to approximately 5.77 U.S. pints.
This information is useful for summer air conditioning.
In Montreal, Laval, and Longueuil, some hot days are particularly humid. Effective air conditioning must not only lower the temperature; it must also remove humidity.
An indoor temperature of 23 °C with excessively high humidity can remain uncomfortable.
AirGreen installation: why the low placement, drainage, and R-454B must be considered together
The console does not need to be placed exactly on the floor
The term “floor console” primarily describes its format and low position.
It must be installed in accordance with the clearances specified by Senville, and its location must allow for:
- proper air intake;
- unrestricted airflow;
- access to the filter;
- maintenance;
- drainage;
- the refrigerant line route.
In our installations, we avoid placing the unit behind:
- a sofa;
- a bed;
- a dresser;
- a heavy curtain;
- a large plant.
A 24,000 BTU unit needs to move several hundred CFM. Blocking its intake or airflow directly reduces its efficiency.
An excellent option under certain windows, but not under just any window
The low-profile design can make the console an interesting option under a window.
However, it must be measured.
The indoor unit is approximately 26.57 in. high.
The required clearances must also be maintained.
In an older Montreal home where the bottom of the window is very close to the floor, the console may not fit.
We therefore measure the actual space rather than assuming that a floor console will fit everywhere under a window.
R-454B is clearly confirmed by the brochure
Senville documentation identifies the refrigerant as R-454B. It indicates a charge of 63.49 oz and a precharge covering 25 ft of piping.
Senville also specifies that the system is precharged for up to 25 ft and that a 50 ft kit requires refrigerant to be added on site by the installer.
This is important information when preparing a quote.
The actual length of the lines must be known before commissioning.
We never assume that old piping is automatically reusable
When replacing a system, a customer sometimes asks us to keep the existing lines to reduce the amount of work.
This may be possible for some projects, but only after verification.
We examine:
- the diameter;
- the length;
- the condition of the lines;
- the old refrigerant;
- the route;

The location must therefore be carefully considered based on:

- decks;
- reflective walls;
- property lines.
An outdoor unit may seem louder in a narrow passage between two buildings than in an open area.
Drainage must be planned as it would be for any heat pump
In cooling mode, the indoor unit removes moisture from the air and produces condensate.
The drain must be installed with an adequate slope when gravity drainage is used.
We want to avoid:
- backflow;
- standing water;
- leaks;
- odors;
- unnecessarily added pumps.
A floor console can sometimes make drainage easier because it is located lower than a wall-mounted head, but the outdoor exit point must still be evaluated.
