A 6,000 BTU indoor unit paired with a 9,000 BTU condenser: small-room comfort with capacity to spare

For a child’s bedroom, home office, or small studio, an oversized unit cycles on and off and leaves the air humid. An undersized unit struggles during heat waves and extreme cold. The DURASTAR Standard Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 6,000 BTU - R410A solves this dilemma in a distinctive way: its DRAW06F1 indoor unit is certified with the DRA1U09S1B outdoor unit, the same one used by the series’ 9,000 BTU system. The result is a discreet small-format system with useful reserve capacity, reaching up to 10,000 BTU/h at maximum capacity at -8 °C and up to 11,500 BTU/h in cooling.

Its certified ratings are 23.5 SEER2, 15.0 EER2, and 12.0 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold climate designation.

Certificate values

  • Cooling: 6,000 BTU/h, range from 4,900 to 11,500 BTU/h
  • At 8 °C: 7,000 BTU/h, range from 3,400 to 11,400 BTU/h, COP of 3.73
  • At -8 °C: 7,500 BTU/h nominal capacity, up to 10,000 BTU/h maximum capacity, COP of 2.50
  • At -15 °C: 7,100 BTU/h, COP of 1.84

These values come from certificate AHRI 210568097, published by NEEP. The system’s certified data ends at -15 °C. According to the DuraStar manual, Standard models provide heating down to -25 °C; below that temperature, the existing baseboard heaters provide the heating on their own.

Quiet, even at full speed

With this system, the indoor unit operates between 20.5 and 38.5 dB(A). Its maximum sound level is the lowest of all the DuraStar wall-mounted heat pumps we offer: even at the highest setting, it remains quieter than several units operating at medium speed. This is a clear advantage in a bedroom. The fan offers three settings of 141, 176, and 247 CFM, well suited to a small room, and Sleep mode gradually adjusts the setpoint overnight.

Making the most of this size

The 6,000 BTU model is intended for enclosed rooms with their own heating and cooling needs: an attic bedroom that overheats in summer, an office where computers generate heat, or a guest room kept at a lower temperature. In these rooms, the heat pump provides cooling and much of the heating, delivering nearly 2.5 times the heat of a baseboard heater for the same amount of electricity at -8 °C. The Follow Me function measures the temperature at the remote control, right where you are, while the Gentle function redirects the airflow when it becomes uncomfortable.

If you want certified heating down to -30 °C in a small room, the Sirius Heat 6,000 BTU using R-454B is another option. We compare the two during the assessment.

LogisVert and this size

This system has ENERGY STAR ID 2410691, but it does not appear on Hydro-Québec’s current LogisVert list: the rebate shown in the product sheet is therefore $0. If financial assistance is important to you, the 12,000 BTU Standard model using R-410A appears on the list with a $1,200 rebate. We always verify the current list as of the planned installation date.

Installation details that matter in a small room

A small room offers few wall-placement options and little room for error. Here is what we plan.

Indoor unit placement

The wall-mounted unit measures 28.70 x 7.87 x 11.50 inches and weighs 17.6 pounds. We position it so the airflow sweeps across the room without blowing directly onto the bed or workstation. The vertical louver oscillates automatically, while the lateral direction is adjusted manually using the adjustment rod. Adequate ceiling clearance is required for air intake, and the condensate drainage slope is planned from the outset.

Outdoor unit

The condenser measures 30.12 x 11.93 x 21.85 inches, weighs 63.7 pounds, and produces 53 dB(A). It includes a base pan heater and an anti-corrosion coating. We install it on a wall bracket anchored to the structure or on a ground stand, above the snow line. DuraStar recommends leaving it powered continuously whenever the outdoor temperature is 0 °C or below.

Refrigerant lines

The lines are 1/4 and 3/8 inch, pre-charged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 82 feet and a maximum elevation difference of 33 feet. Beyond the pre-charge length, we add 0.16 ounces of refrigerant per foot. Our installations are fully exposed, with no need to open interior walls, and a finished line cover can be added to protect the lines.

Electrical

208-230 V power supply, 13 A MCA, and a 15 A circuit breaker on a dedicated circuit. This modest requirement integrates easily with most residential panels.

Unit functions

In addition to Follow Me, Sleep, and Gentle, the remote control offers ECO/GEAR to reduce cooling power consumption, Turbo, Silence, the Clean function, a timer, and freeze protection that maintains the room at 8 °C. An alert code appears in the event of a refrigerant leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar states that its indoor units are compatible with the DR24VINT2 24 V interface, which allows connection to a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat.

R-410A refrigerant

R-410A is a non-flammable refrigerant that has been used for many years. According to ENERGY STAR, its global warming potential is 2,088, compared with 470 for R-454B, which the industry is moving toward.

What is normal

  • White vapour from the condenser during defrosting, lasting five to ten minutes.
  • A three-minute delay before restarting.
  • A rush of air when the louver returns to position, a slight hissing sound, and plastic creaking.

Water leaking indoors, a persistent error code, or a tripped circuit breaker requires shutting off the unit and arranging a service visit.

Maintenance

Clean the indoor filters every two weeks, keep the condenser clear of snow, and schedule annual HVAC maintenance for the coils, drain, and electrical connections.
