The wall-mounted unit that replaces a heating system, not the one that complements it
The TCL Ultimate 25 24,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump is the top of the line, designed to meet a specific need: heating and cooling most of a bungalow, a large floor, or an entire dwelling with a single unit, without relying on backup heat for most of the winter.
Many wall-mounted units claim this ambition, but few actually deliver. The difference can be seen in a single line of the certified data sheet: 22,000 BTU/h still available at -8 °C.
What the machine really delivers, temperature by temperature
Data from the NEEP cold-climate heat pump directory, based on AHRI-certified testing:
- 24,000 BTU/h at 8.3 °C — COP 3.50
- 22,000 BTU/h at -8 °C — COP 2.80
- 22,400 BTU/h at -15 °C — COP 1.80
- 14,000 BTU/h at -30 °C at maximum capacity — COP 1.60
Two observations. Capacity at -15 °C is slightly higher than the capacity measured at -8 °C: this is not a typo, but the normal behavior of an inverter compressor whose modulation strategy changes according to the outdoor temperature range. And the maximum capacity at -30 °C, at 14,000 BTU/h, remains the highest in the entire Ultimate 25 lineup — with a COP of 1.60, still 60% better than electric resistance heating under the most extreme conditions experienced in southern Quebec.
In practical terms, a homeowner in Longueuil or Terrebonne who sizes this unit correctly will see their backup heating start up for a few dozen hours per year, not a few hundred.
Sizing for primary heating: the method, not the rule of thumb
When a wall-mounted unit becomes the primary heating source, guesswork is no longer acceptable. An undersized unit leaves the backup heat running all winter and wipes out the expected savings; an oversized unit short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly in summer, and wears out prematurely.
Our assessment takes into account the actual floor area and volume, the insulation level observed on site, the size and orientation of the glazing, the building's airtightness, whether there is a heated basement, and the area's design temperature. In Montreal, it already differs from that of Saint-Jérôme or Mirabel; ignoring this difference distorts the entire calculation.
We then determine the balance point: the outdoor temperature at which the heat pump's capacity intersects the building's heating load. This is the figure that truly predicts the winter energy bill, and it is what we present to the customer instead of promising a percentage of savings.

Three physical constraints to address before ordering
At this size, the unit imposes requirements that lower-capacity models do not. Ignoring them leads to surprises on installation day.
The outdoor unit becomes bulky
Measuring 38.50 x 16.56 x 31.63 in. and weighing nearly 49 kg, the outdoor unit requires a solid base and genuine clearance. On a triplex's rear balcony, a narrow concrete slab, or the side of a house four feet from a neighbor, the location must be verified with a tape measure during the technical visit, not on a plan. We also plan for future service access: a unit that can no longer be reached becomes expensive at the first service call.
Outdoor noise deserves a conscious decision
At 61 dB(A), the outdoor unit is the loudest in the series — a direct consequence of its capacity. In a neighborhood with closely spaced homes, the choice of facade, distance from bedroom windows, and use of vibration-isolating mounts are not optional. Several municipalities in Greater Montreal regulate mechanical equipment noise at property lines; we take this into account when proposing the location.
The 5/8 in. piping changes the routing
The 5/8 in. gas line is less flexible to bend and does not tolerate convoluted runs well. A route planned in advance, with proper bend radii, protects the system's performance and durability. It also prevents unattractive exposed lines on the facade.
LogisVert financial assistance
This model qualifies for $2,640 in assistance through Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program for an owner of an existing home — the highest amount in the TCL wall-mounted lineup. In new construction, the assistance reaches $3,080; in a multi-unit building with the optimization option, $3,850.
The application must be submitted within nine months of installation. We verify eligibility before the work, prepare the documents, and support the customer through submission. Amounts and eligible-equipment lists are reviewed periodically, so we always confirm the exact figure when preparing the quote.
What happens when the sizing is right
A properly sized system shows specific signs. The unit runs for long periods at low speed instead of constantly starting and stopping; temperatures vary little from one room to another; in cooling mode, the air feels dry rather than merely cold; and the backup heat remains silent for most of the season.
Conversely, a unit that short-cycles, leaves a humid feeling in summer, or activates backup heat as soon as the temperature reaches -10 °C almost always indicates an evaluation error earlier in the process, rarely a defect in the machine.
Maintenance
The indoor filters should be cleaned every four weeks during periods of heavy use. Professional maintenance every two years covers the indoor coil, condensate pan, charge check, and inspection of the outdoor coil. In winter, keeping the outdoor air intake clear of snow is the only task that requires regular attention from the homeowner.
