A system at a complete standstill in the heat
It was in Boisbriand , on the North Shore of Montreal, that a customer contacted us about a complete breakdown of their Goodman central heat pump . In the middle of June, their air conditioning system refused to start, leaving the house without cooling for more than 24 hours. Context of the installation and initial findings
The outdoor unit, a Goodman GSX series model , was installed on a metal wall bracket in a narrow side driveway. This type of installation is common in suburban homes where space is limited.
From the initial inspection, our technicians noticed that:

The condenser fan would not turn on.

The compressor produced no operating noise.

The power supply appeared to be intact, but the control board showed no signal.
These clues pointed to a problem with the starter relay or capacitor —two common causes of failure on older Goodman systems.
In-depth diagnosis: the heart of the problem identified
To confirm our hypothesis, we carried out a series of tests:

Measuring the supply voltage at the external panel.

Checking the relay and capacitor with a multimeter.

Inspection of the communication wiring between the heat pump and the indoor furnace.
Result: The compressor start capacitor showed a significant drop in capacity (less than 40% of the nominal value). This prevented the compressor from starting the refrigeration cycle.
Additionally, the condenser vent showed signs of mechanical friction—likely caused by dust and moisture accumulation under the upper grille.
Repair: replacement of components and refurbishment of the system
We therefore proceeded to:

Replace the capacitor with a certified Goodman model (45/5 µF dual run capacitor).

Clean the condenser fan and lubricate its central shaft.

Tighten the electrical connections at the main contactor.

Check the R410A refrigerant charge , which was found to be compliant.

Test a full system reboot , under technical supervision.
As soon as it was switched on, the heat pump resumed its normal cycle: active compressor, powerful airflow and stable blowing temperature at 13°C . The customer immediately felt the difference.
