An intervention on the roof of a modern building in the heart of Montreal
In the vibrant center of Ville-Marie , surrounded by modern buildings and a breathtaking view of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge , our AirGreen team was called for an urgent service call regarding a Goodman wall-mounted heat pump installed on the roof of a residential complex. In the middle of summer, when urban heat reaches its peak, an HVAC system failure in a downtown condo quickly becomes a comfort and quality of life issue.
Initial diagnosis: an overheating Goodman heat pump
Upon arriving on the roof, we noticed a Goodman mini-split wall-mounted outdoor unit installed on a wooden base in the middle of a gravel roof. The customer had reported that the unit had stopped producing cold air since the day before and that an unusual noise was heard each time it tried to start it.
Our technicians carried out a complete inspection:
-
Checking refrigerant pressure ;
-
Inspection of fittings and refrigeration insulation ;
-
Checking the electronic card and starting relays ;
-
Condenser fan and compressor inspection.
Result: compressor overheating caused by a partial lack of R410A refrigerant and ventilation obstructed by debris and fine gravel particles accumulated around the fins.
Intervention: refrigeration circuit upgrade and complete cleaning
After securing the power supply, our team:
-
Deep cleaned the outdoor condenser , using a biodegradable solution suitable for rooftop units;
-
Checked the complete tightness of the circuit using an electronic leak detector ;
-
Replaced a slightly cracked flare fitting ;
-
Performed a full vacuum draw before recharging the system with R410A according to Goodman specifications;
-
Checked compressor operating current and discharge temperature to ensure optimal performance.
During these operations, we also repositioned and protected the power cables and refrigeration pipes with a new insulating sheath , adapted to the climatic conditions of the roof.
Result: restored comfort and optimized performance
Once the system was restarted, the Goodman heat pump immediately returned to its original performance. The indoor air temperature was 8°C cooler than the ambient temperature, and the noise level had returned to normal. The client was able to enjoy consistent comfort in his apartment again without excess energy consumption.
Our team left the site clean and secure, while explaining to the client good preventive maintenance practices for rooftop installations:
-
Check filters and air circulation monthly;
-
Avoid accumulation of dust and gravel around the unit;
-
Schedule an annual professional interview before each summer.
