Rapid field diagnosis: a damaged outdoor unit
At AirGreen , our HVAC repair technicians regularly work on equipment damaged by time or weather. During a service call in Sainte-Dorothée (Laval) , we were contacted for a Midea wall-mounted heat pump whose outdoor condenser was deformed and showing a significant loss of performance .
The customer reported to us that the unit appeared to be working, but without reaching the desired temperature, and that the hot airflow had become weak and irregular .
Step 1: Visual inspection and initial findings
Upon our arrival, we carried out a complete inspection of the outdoor condenser .
The unit, installed on a raised concrete slab, showed several worrying signs:
-
Protective grille twisted and partially open .
-
Exposed heat exchanger coils , showing signs of oxidation .
-
Dents on the upper part of the bodywork, probably caused by an impact or mishandling during previous maintenance.
These elements suggested an alteration in the air flow and therefore an overload of the compressor , which explained the reduced performance of the heat pump.
Step 2: Functional tests and technical diagnosis
Our technicians then carried out a complete electronic diagnosis .
Using our measuring instruments:
-
Refrigerant pressure : slightly lower than standard (indicating a microleak).
-
Power supply voltage : stable, eliminating any electrical failure.
-
Fan speed : normal, but abnormal background noise detected, suggesting an unbalanced blade .
We confirmed that the leak was coming from a weakened weld on the pipe connecting the condenser to the compressor —a typical problem when an outdoor unit experiences mechanical twisting.
Step 3: Repair and Refurbishment
Our intervention took place in several precise stages:
-
Straightening and securing the chassis using a temporary support to restore alignment.
-
Replacement of the damaged copper pipe section , followed by a nitrogen leak test .
-
Complete recharge of R-410A refrigerant after purging.
-
Complete cleaning of the condenser using a biodegradable product to improve heat exchange.
-
Final calibration of the compressor and fan via the electronic card.
Once these steps were completed, we performed a full performance test :
the air flow was back to optimal, the pressure stabilized and the outlet temperature was in line with the manufacturer's specifications.
Step 4: Result and customer satisfaction
After the repair, the customer immediately noticed the difference:
The Midea heat pump was operating at full capacity , providing fast and stable heating in all rooms.
We have also installed a reinforced protective grille to prevent any further physical shock to the unit.
Finally, our technicians took the time to explain good maintenance practices :
-
keep the outdoor unit clear of vegetation,
-
clean the coils once a year,
-
and plan a preventive inspection before each winter.
