Keep your floors and your radiators. Change what heats the water.
An air-to-water heat pump replaces or backs up your boiler, oil-fired or electric. Even at −15 °C, the Midea M Thermal Arctic still delivers 2.06 times more heat than it uses, according to its spec sheet. Slide the thermometer to see.
Your 100% free in-home estimate
An air-to-water heat pump is chosen at your place: we look at your boiler, your emitters and where the outdoor unit will go. The visit is free.

How an air-to-water heat pump works: from January air to the water in your floor.
It moves heat from the outdoor air into your heating water. Tap an emitter and a configuration: the diagram shows where the refrigerant and the hot water flow.
Step · Capture
The outdoor unit captures heat from the air, even in winter, thanks to the refrigerant and the compressor.
Radiant floor · water 30 to 40 °C
The ideal emitter: lukewarm water is enough, and the cooler the water, the more heat the heat pump gives back for every kilowatt-hour. A well-designed floor runs between 30 and 40 °C.
Source: Midea spec sheet
Configuration
Split: a refrigerant line connects the outdoor unit to the hydronic module installed indoors. No water leaves the house, so nothing freezes outside.
Energy efficiency
An electric boiler gives 1 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh it uses. According to its spec sheet, the Midea gives 4.5 at +7 °C and still 2.06 at −15 °C.
Savings
The cooler the supply water, the higher the efficiency: a radiant floor running between 30 and 40 °C gets the most out of it. The heating curve adjusts the water to the weather.
Versatility
Heating through the floor, radiators or fan coils, domestic hot water and, with fan coils, summer air conditioning: one single outdoor unit.
Split or monobloc air-to-water heat pump: the real difference is where the water goes.
Both produce the same hot water. What changes: what goes through the wall, and who does which work.
Split
No water outsideA refrigerant line connects the outdoor unit to a hydronic module installed indoors. Only the heating water circulates in the house.
- Nothing freezes outside, no antifreeze in the outdoor circuit
- Wall-mounted module that frees up floor space in the mechanical room (Midea)
- Refrigerant line installed by our refrigeration technicians (15.10)
Our splits: Midea M Thermal Arctic, Gree Versati III, Hydro Solar 2.5 · 5 · 7 tons, effiQueenc 5 tons.
Monobloc
Water goes through the wallEverything happens in the outdoor unit, heat exchanger included. The hot water leaves from outside and enters the house through freeze-protected pipes.
- No refrigerant line to install: the unit is factory-sealed
- Outdoor circuit must be protected from freezing (glycol or other)
- Water connection by our licensed partner (15.4)
Our monoblocs: Gree Versati IV, Hydro Solar 2.5 · 5 · 7 tons, effiQueenc 5 tons.

À −7 °C outside, with water at 35 °C, the Midea delivers 45,377 BTU/h and gives 2.7 times more heat than the electricity it uses.
The spec sheet shows less at +2 °C than at −7 °C: frost builds up most on the outdoor unit around 0 °C, so it defrosts more often.

An air-to-water heat pump is for homes heated with water.
Oil-fired or electric boiler, radiant floor, radiators: your emitters stay. With no water loop, a wall-mounted or central heat pump is simpler, and it can qualify for LogisVert.
Oil-fired boiler
The heat pump replaces it; your radiators or floors stay.
Radiant floor
Low temperature: the best efficiency you can get.
Electric boiler
It can stay on as backup in extreme cold.
Stays in place
- Radiators and radiant floors
- Distribution piping
- Zone thermostats (24 V compatible on the Midea)
After
- Outdoor unit on a raised base
- Wall-mounted hydronic module (split)
- Buffer tank and electric backup heat if needed
Who does what

Air-to-water heat pump in 2.5, 5 or 7 tons: your floor area gives you the ballpark.
Slide to your heated area. The room-by-room heat loss calculation settles it at the visit.
AirGreen rule: about 18,000 BTU/h per 1,000 sq ft, adjusted at the visit for insulation, windows and ceiling height. At −15 °C, a 5-ton unit delivers less than its rating (33,780 BTU/h for the Midea), hence the backup heat.

5 tons · 54,500 to 60,000 BTU
Estimated need: about 39,600 BTU/h for 2,200 sq ft.

Full heating
The coldest weeks: the heat pump heats, and the electric backup helps during peaks. You clear the snow around the unit.
The two parts people often forget, and the ones that make you comfortable.
The buffer tank holds a reserve of hot water; backup heat takes over in extreme cold. Both are decided when the loop is designed.
Without a buffer tank, when a single small zone calls for heat or during a defrost, the compressor starts and stops often: more wear, less comfort.
Backup heat, for extreme cold
A heat pump’s capacity drops as it gets colder. Electric backup heat fills the gap: on the Midea, a 3 kW element is factory-installed in the module. Its size is calculated at the visit, based on your heat loss.
Who installs it
The buffer tank, hydraulic separator and glycol are part of the water loop: they are installed by our licensed hydronic heating partner (15.4).
It heats water, not air: your home still needs an air exchanger.
An air-to-water system doesn’t move air: nothing removes humidity or brings in fresh air. An air exchanger (HRV or ERV) takes care of that, recovering heat from the outgoing air. We install it with the same team (licence 15.8).
The exchanger brings in filtered fresh air and exhausts stale air. Its core recovers heat from the outgoing air: up to 83% at 0 °C on the RNC205, according to HVI.
HRV or ERV: how to choose
Fogged windows or a damp basement in winter?
Very dry air in winter, or air conditioning in summer?
Answer both questions.
We show you the type of exchanger that fits best, then confirm it at the visit.
