What is a multi-zone heat pump? One compressor outside, one head in each room.

A multi-zone heat pump connects a single outdoor unit to several indoor units installed in different rooms. Each head is set separately: that is what sets it apart from a single-zone wall heat pump.

In winter. The outdoor unit captures heat from the outside air, even when it is cold, and the refrigerant carries it to the heads, which release it in each room.

In summer. The path reverses: the heads pick up heat from the rooms, the refrigerant carries it outside and the outdoor unit releases it. The heads dehumidify on the way.

LogisVert pays according to the heat delivered at -8 °C, and only if the combination is ENERGY STAR certified; the rate goes from $50 to $120 when it is cold-climate. These two multi-zone units both deliver 30,000 BTU/h at -8 °C.

Your multi-zone heats the air in the room. It does not bring in fresh air.

A multi-zone system recirculates the air in each room. Fresh air comes from an air exchanger: it sends stale air out and brings outdoor air in, recovering its heat on the way.

What is a multi-zone heat pump?

A heating and cooling system that connects a single outdoor unit to several indoor units (2 to 8), one per room or zone. Each head is set separately, which sets it apart from a single-zone wall heat pump.

Can I install a multi-zone heat pump in an older home?

Yes. There are no air ducts to build: small refrigerant lines connect each head to the outdoor unit. The estimator also checks your electrical panel during the visit.

How many heads can connect to one outdoor unit?

From 2 to 8 depending on the model. In our catalogue: 194 models with 2 zones, 158 with 3, 113 with 4, 59 with 5 and 27 with 6 zones or more. The maximum number of heads is on each product page.

Can I control each zone’s temperature remotely?

Yes, if the model has Wi-Fi. In our multi-zone catalogue, Wi-Fi is included on 224 models and optional on 287; 41 have none. Each head also keeps its remote.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the number of heads and how the lines run from the outdoor unit to each room. The duration is written in the estimate, after the visit.

Is a multi-zone eligible for LogisVert?

Yes, if the installed combination is ENERGY STAR certified and the outdoor unit is at least 12,000 BTU/h in cooling. Hydro-Québec pays $50 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C, or $120 if the model is cold-climate, up to 100% of the cost before taxes.

Can one room heat while another cools?

No. On a residential multi-zone, all heads heat or all heads cool at the same time. Each room does keep its own set temperature, and a head can stay off.

Multi-zone or several wall units?

A multi-zone puts a single compressor outside for all rooms. Several wall units give each room its own independent machine; for LogisVert, each outdoor unit must then be at least 12,000 BTU/h. We compare both options during the visit.

Does a multi-zone heat enough in Montréal’s deep cold?

The cold-climate models in our selection still heat down to -25 to -30 °C according to their product sheets; their output drops before that limit. The estimator sizes based on the heat delivered in cold weather, not only the nominal capacity.

Does a multi-zone bring in fresh air?

No. It heats, cools and dehumidifies the air in the room. To renew the air you need an air exchanger (HRV or ERV), which we also install.

Do I need a permit from my city?

It depends on the city and where the outdoor unit goes (distance from the neighbouring lot, noise, façade). Our Permits and Regulations page sums up the rules for each area.

How much does an installed multi-zone heat pump cost?

The price depends on the number and format of heads, the line route, the outdoor location, your electrical panel and the model. The visit is free and the written estimate is sent within 24 hours.
