A central heat pump heats in winter and cools in summer using the home’s air duct network. Unlike a wall-mounted heat pump that works room by room, it covers the whole house and keeps every room at an even temperature. It can replace both a traditional furnace and a central air conditioner.

The system has an outdoor unit and an indoor unit linked by refrigerant lines. In winter it extracts heat from the outdoor air, even in deep cold (down to -35 °C depending on the model), and moves it inside. In summer the cycle reverses: it takes heat out of the house and releases it outside, while drying the air. The indoor blower sends the air to every room through the vents.

Capacity, in BTU/h or tons, has to match the house. Undersized, the heat pump falls short in mid-winter; oversized, it costs more and short-cycles, which dehumidifies poorly in summer.

Floor area, ceiling height, insulation, windows and orientation all count. As a guide, 1.5 tons (18,000 BTU/h) usually suits about 600 to 800 sq ft, and 5 tons (60,000 BTU/h) a 2,800 to 3,200 sq ft home. Our estimator confirms the capacity before the quote.

SEER2 measures seasonal cooling efficiency, HSPF2 heating efficiency. The higher they are, the less the unit uses. Our spec sheets show the manufacturer’s rating.

ENERGY STAR certification guarantees above-average performance. It is also required for the LogisVert grant, which is based on capacity at -8 °C: a figure worth comparing from one sheet to the next.

A central heat pump is a long-term investment. Noise is mostly an outdoor-unit matter. Manufacturers rate it in decibels; our spec sheets go down to 48 dB. A variable-speed compressor, an anti-vibration base and a well-chosen spot away from bedrooms and neighbours make a real difference.

If you have a forced-air furnace (electric, gas or oil) and ducts, the central heat pump can often be paired with your existing furnace: it heats as long as the outdoor temperature allows, and the furnace takes over in extreme cold. For the gas or oil side, we work with a licensed partner.

If you heat with baseboards or a ductless radiant system, a duct network has to be installed. When that is too complex, wall-mounted heat pumps or a multi-zone system are often the better option. Every home is different: we advise the realistic solution.

No. Chauffez vert closed on March 31, 2026 and the federal Greener Homes grant is closed. Today, for a central heat pump, it is LogisVert.

Often, yes. The heat pump installs on the existing forced-air furnace (add-on): it heats as long as it can, and the furnace is the backup. For a gas or oil furnace, the fuel side is handled by a licensed partner.

A duct network then has to be installed. When that is too complex (finished walls, no space), wall-mounted heat pumps or a multi-zone system deliver the same comfort room by room.

R-32 and R-454B are used in the new generations and have a lower global warming potential than R-410A. The refrigerant changes the unit, the piping and the service, not the way it heats.

In Québec: RBQ 15.10 for refrigeration, 15.8 for ventilation and 16 for electrical. AirGreen holds all three (RBQ 5645-9605-01).
