LG central heat pumps: standard or LGRED°, same size, certified figures side by side

13 LG R-32 central systems from 1 to 4 tons: a KUSX outdoor unit and a KNSL air handler connected to your ductwork. The standard line heats down to −20°C, the LGRED° line down to −25°C. On this page the two lines face off at the same size, and LogisVert does not always pay more for the second one.

The two lines

One architecture, two outdoor units

LG names its systems KSSLB (standard) and KSSLA (LGRED°); LG Canada calls them single-zone units and single-zone LGRED units. Either way, the air handler takes the furnace’s place and blows into your ductwork.

Standard or LGRED°: the face-off, ton by ton

At −15°C the LGRED° gives 3,000 BTU/h more than the standard at 1.5, 2 and 2.5 tons, and 7,500 more at 4 tons. At 3 tons both deliver 33,000 BTU/h, the LGRED° at a COP of 2.00 versus 1.85, and only the LGRED° keeps going down to −25°C.

A Montréal winter

What each line delivers as the thermometer drops

At Montréal-Trudeau the daily minimum drops below −20°C, the standard line’s limit, about 12 days a year (1991-2020 normals). On those days a standard system hands over to backup heat; an LGRED° keeps going down to −25°C.

COP in the cold

At the coldest test point the certified COP runs from 1.40 to 1.73 at −20°C for the standard, and from 1.58 to 1.76 at −25°C for the LGRED°. Even there, each kilowatt-hour of electricity gives more than a kilowatt-hour of heat.

From 3 to 4 tons, the standard gets more than the LGRED°

Hydro-Québec bases the amount on the certified rated output at −8°C, not on performance at −25°C. At 3, 3.5 and 4 tons the standard certifies more at −8°C, so it gets more. At 1.5, 2 and 2.5 tons it is the other way round.

12 of the 13 systems are on the list, all at the Cold Climate rate, from $1,140 to $3,768. The one-ton standard is certified at 12,000 BTU/h in cooling, exactly Hydro-Québec’s minimum.

What LogisVert excludes for a central system

  • Geothermal: a central heat pump installed in a geothermally heated house does not qualify.
  • Insulated envelope: an indoor unit or ducts outside the insulated envelope, in an attic for example, are excluded.
Certified rated output at −8°C (BTU/h) and amount from Hydro-Québec’s list of October 27, 2026; all of these systems are paid at the Cold Climate rate of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h. Indicative amounts, to be confirmed by Hydro-Québec.

What the certificates say

Six figures to know before picking the size

  1. 6 / 12certified systems have certified cooling below their title tonnage (for example 45,500 BTU/h for the 4-ton standard).
  2. 17.0 to 19.0certified SEER2 of the 12 systems; EER2 from 11.7 to 13.5 and HSPF2 from 9.4 to 10.0 in region IV.
  3. 7.42 to 8.89HSPF2 in region V (cold climate), from the 4-ton standard to the 1.5-ton LGRED°.
  4. KNSLBAt 3.5 and 4 tons, standard and LGRED° share the same air handler; only the outdoor unit changes.
  5. 120 Wbase pan heater on the certified outdoor units, per NEEP.
  6. CentralNEEP files these 12 systems as “Centrally Ducted”, not as compact ducted units.
Replacing a central system

Keep your ducts and, often, your line set

Existing R-410A line set

When replacing an R-410A system, LG allows the existing line set to be reused if it is tight, clean and acid-free, after an R-32-compatible flush and with a bidirectional filter drier; the charge is checked with LG’s LATS software.

We check the line set on site before promising it.

The indoor unit

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us most

LG standard or LGRED° central: which one?
If you want the heat pump to keep heating down to −25°C, the LGRED°. If backup heat takes over below −20°C, the standard does the job, and from 3 to 4 tons it even gets a little more LogisVert.
Why does the 3-ton LGRED° get less LogisVert than the standard?
Hydro-Québec pays on the certified rated output at −8°C: 27,000 BTU/h for the standard, 25,400 for the LGRED°. Hence $3,240 versus $3,048 on the list of October 27, 2026.
Is the 3.5-ton LGRED° central certified?
The LG pair KUSXA422A with KNSLB421A (AHRI 215735573) is: ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certified and listed by Hydro-Québec at $3,576. Our listing shows this pair’s figures but another AHRI number (215588569), which is on no list. We put the exact pair, and its AHRI number, on the quote.
What size of central system do I need?
The one your home’s load calculation justifies, not the number in the title: six of the twelve certified systems cool less than their nominal tonnage. We run the calculation during the estimate.
Can I keep my existing ductwork?
Yes, that is the whole idea of a central system. The LG air handler replaces the furnace and connects to the duct network; we check the ducts’ condition and layout during the visit.
Does an LG central heat below −25°C?
No: the LGRED° heats down to −25°C and the standard down to −20°C, per LG and NEEP’s test points. Below that, backup heat takes over.
