10 · True or false

Six common beliefs about winter humidity. Test yourself.

Answer and the explanation appears with its source. Your score updates.

1 / 6More humidity is always better.
2 / 6On a heat pump, a bypass humidifier loses effectiveness.
3 / 6An HRV air exchanger dries out the house in winter.
4 / 6You should keep 45% all winter.
5 / 6A steam humidifier doesn’t need warm air.
6 / 6A humidifier pad lasts for years.

11 · A season with your humidifier

Four steps a year. We can do them for you.

A well-maintained humidifier works like on day one. Here’s the calendar, from October to April.

01October

Start-up

New pad, water on, control set to automatic. We check the drain on models that have one.

02November to March

The control does the work

It lowers humidity as the cold sets in, to protect the windows. Nothing to do but watch for fog.

03Mid-season

The AprilAire 400 pad

Every 3 months according to AprilAire. For steam models, cylinder maintenance per the manual.

04April

End of season

Water off and summer settings per the model’s manual. A technician can take care of it during maintenance.

12 · Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we get every fall.

Health Canada recommends 30 to 50% relative humidity. In extreme cold, you lower it: the AprilAire control manual recommends 25% at −18 °C and 15% at −29 °C to avoid condensation on windows. An automatic control makes this adjustment on its own.
Your project

A properly humidified home from the first cold snap.

We come look at your heating, ducts, air exchanger and windows, then recommend the right model. The in-home estimate is free, and the written quote arrives within 24 h after the visit.
