AprilAire 800 Steam Humidifier | Installation in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore and North Shore
Is it the right size for your home?
It produces 34.6 gallons of steam a day (at 240 V, 16 A setting), enough to humidify up to 4,000 sq ft according to the manufacturer. Pick your home's living area.
It's the right size.
For a 1,500 to 2,500 sq ft house, it's within its range. It will run at part load on ordinary days and keep a reserve for the coldest days.
Area published by AprilAire for an average-construction home, at the 16 A setting. For a very tight home: 6,000 sq ft. Older or leaky house: go one size up; our estimator confirms it on site.
What it does, in numbers
$112
Electricity per winter
It rarely runs at full output
Same period for every line, November 1 to March 31 (150 days), at Hydro-Québec's Rate D second tier (11.142 ¢/kWh). At full output it costs $0.42 an hour.
Full output with a heat pump. It heats its own water, so it doesn't depend on the air temperature in the ducts.
Output and current: manufacturer's spec (34.6 gal/day, at 240 V, 16 A setting), hence 3.8 kW. Cost per winter: 2,000 sq ft house with 9 ft ceilings, 0.35 air changes per hour (the same basis as our air exchangers), −5 °C and 75% humidity outside on average, 35% targeted indoors, minus the moisture a family of four already produces. A leakier house, or a higher setting, costs more.
What you should know about this one
Published, verifiable figures, not brochure claims.
34.6 galWhat it produces per day, at full output
About 131 litres of water turned into steam in 24 hours. The control runs it to match the humidity you set: it rarely runs flat out, except in very cold weather.
SteamIt doesn't depend on warm air
An evaporative humidifier needs warm air to evaporate the water from its pad. Behind a heat pump, which blows cooler air than a furnace, it produces less. This one heats its own water: same output, whatever the system.
0No pad to replace every fall
The electrodes and the cylinder wear according to water hardness. We check them at the yearly service, along with the rest of the system.
23.3 galAs it leaves the factory
It ships set for 240 V and 11.5 A, which gives 23.3 gal/day. Set to 16 A, it reaches 34.6 gal/day and needs a 25 A breaker (20 A at the 11.5 A setting).
120 to 240 VIt adapts to your panel
At 120 V it gives 11.5 or 16 gal/day; at 208 V, 20.5 or 30 gal/day. We pick the setting to suit the house and the electrical panel.
All inWhat's in the box
Model 62 control, outdoor sensor, Model 80 canister, dispersion tube, 6 ft steam hose, drain tubing and saddle valve.
ControlThe control that comes with it
AprilAire Model 62 automatic digital control with outdoor sensor.
UpkeepWhat gets replaced, and when
AprilAire Model 80 canister (80LC for very soft water), replace every year or when the Service light flashes.
35%The humidity to aim for in winter, at most
At −7 °C, no more than 35%; at −18 °C, no more than 25%. Above that, the moisture condenses on the windows. The control adjusts for you if it has an outdoor sensor.
5 yearsThe manufacturer's warranty, and what it covers
5 years on the unit. The canister is a wear part and isn't covered. We register the warranty in your name at start-up.
What it needs on site
A steam humidifier needs an electrical circuit of its own. Our estimator checks the panel, the water supply and the drain before ordering.

AprilAire 800: steam that doesn't depend on furnace heat
The AprilAire 800 makes its own steam in a canister and injects it into the ducts. It reaches 34.6 gal/day at 240 V on the 16 A setting and covers up to 4,000 sq ft according to the manufacturer. Since it doesn't need warm air to evaporate water, it keeps its output behind a heat pump.
Output you can set
Factory-set for 240 V and 11.5 A, it gives 23.3 gal/day; at 16 A, 34.6 gal/day. It also accepts 120 V (11.5 or 16 gal/day) and 208 V (20.5 or 30 gal/day): we pick the setting to suit the house and the electrical panel. It comes with the AprilAire Model 62 automatic control and its outdoor sensor, the Model 80 canister and the dispersion tube.
What it needs on site
The 800 needs a dedicated circuit: a 20 A breaker at the 11.5 A setting, 25 A at the 16 A setting. It also needs a water supply and a drain. The Model 80 canister (80LC for very soft water) is replaced every year or when the Service light flashes; the 5-year warranty doesn't cover it.
