A baseboard thermostat carries the heating current. A central-system thermostat only sends a small signal to the unit. Watch the current flow.

Which thermostat for electric baseboards?

An electronic 120/240 V “line-voltage” thermostat. It must handle the total wattage of the baseboards it controls, usually 3,000 W or 4,000 W. In our catalogue: Sinopé, Mysa LITE, Stelpro, Ouellet, Honeywell (TH line).

Can I put an ecobee or a Nest on my baseboards?

No. They are 24 V thermostats made for central systems (central heat pump, furnace, air conditioning). Connected to a baseboard, they don’t work. Baseboards need a 120/240 V model.

How much can I save?

Hydro-Québec says an electronic thermostat instead of a dial thermostat can cut the bill by up to 10% a year. Natural Resources Canada estimates that lowering the temperature 1°C for 8 hours saves about 2% of heating energy. For ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats on central systems, the published figure is about 8%.

What is Rate Flex D?

A Hydro-Québec winter rate (December 1 to March 31). Electricity is cheaper most of the time (4.886¢ and 9.103¢ per kWh as of April 1, 2026), but 46.463¢ during peak events, between 6 and 10 a.m. or 4 and 8 p.m., up to 120 hours per winter. For it to apply this winter, sign up by November 30 in your Customer Space.

And what is Hilo?

Hilo is a Hydro-Québec service that automates your setbacks during Rate Flex D peak events. Hydro-Québec advertises Hilo devices at $0 and a bonus of up to $210 per existing device you connect. Hilo accepts brands such as Honeywell Home, Sinopé and Mysa; confirm your model with Hilo.

Is there a thermostat grant in 2026?

Not for most households. LogisVert does not fund thermostats for homeowners in general, and the Canada Greener Homes Grant is closed. Exception: the LogisVert stream for low-income households and tenants provides smart thermostats installed by Hilo.

Do I need an electrician to replace a baseboard thermostat?

Yes. A baseboard thermostat runs on 240 V: it’s an electrical installation. Hydro-Québec recommends hiring a master electrician. AirGreen holds RBQ subclass 16 (electrical contractor).

Can my ductless heat pump have a wall thermostat?

Yes, in three ways depending on brand and series: a manufacturer wall controller (Fujitsu, GREE, Moovair, Senville, Samsung…), a Wi-Fi module to control it from your phone, or a 24 V adapter (Fujitsu UTY-TTRXZ1, GREE ME34-44/G) to connect a regular thermostat.

What is the C wire?

On a 24 V central system, the C (common) wire gives the thermostat continuous power. Most Wi-Fi thermostats need it. If it’s missing, we can run a wire or use a kit such as the ecobee Power Extender Kit. We check on site.

What temperature should I set?

Natural Resources Canada advises not going below 17°C, to avoid moisture in the walls. During a peak event, Hydro-Québec suggests pre-heating to 22.5°C beforehand, then holding 20°C during the event.

How many thermostats do I need?

For baseboards: usually one per room, and never more watts than the thermostat accepts. For a central system: one per system, unless you add zoning. We count during the visit.

Are old dial thermostats still allowed?

Since August 15, 2017, a baseboard thermostat sold in Québec must have a drift of no more than 1.5°C and a differential of no more than 0.5°C (Regulation N-1.01, r. 1). An electronic thermostat holds the temperature much closer to the setpoint.
