Same period for every line, November 1 to March 31 (150 days), at Hydro-Québec's Rate D second tier (11.142 ¢/kWh). At full output it costs $0.42 an hour.
Full output with a heat pump. It heats its own water, so it doesn't depend on the air temperature in the ducts.
Output and current: manufacturer's spec (34.6 gal/day, at 240 V, 16 A setting), hence 3.8 kW. Cost per winter: 2,000 sq ft house with 9 ft ceilings, 0.35 air changes per hour (the same basis as our air exchangers), −5 °C and 75% humidity outside on average, 35% targeted indoors, minus the moisture a family of four already produces. A leakier house, or a higher setting, costs more.

SteamIt doesn't depend on warm air
An evaporative humidifier needs warm air to evaporate the water from its pad. Behind a heat pump, which blows cooler air than a furnace, it produces less. This one heats its own water: same output, whatever the system.
0No pad to replace every fall
The electrodes and the cylinder wear according to water hardness. We check them at the yearly service, along with the rest of the system.
No ductsThe steam goes straight into the house
It's the AprilAire 800 shipped with the Model 850 fan pack: the steam is blown into the room, no ductwork involved. For homes with baseboards, hot-water heat or wall units.

AprilAire 865: the AprilAire 800's steam, blown straight into the house
The AprilAire 865 is for homes heated with baseboards, hot water or ductless wall heat pumps. It's an AprilAire 800 steam humidifier paired with the Model 850 fan pack, which blows the steam into the room without going through ducts. It reaches 34.6 gal/day at 240 V on the 16 A setting and covers up to 4,000 sq ft according to the manufacturer.
How it differs from the 800
- The Model 850 fan pack replaces the dispersion tube: the unit works with no furnace and no ducts.
- It comes with an AprilAire Model 65 digital manual humidistat, with no outdoor sensor, instead of the 800's Model 62 automatic control.
- The box also includes the Model 4028 drain trap.
What it needs on site
It ships set for 240 V and 11.5 A, which gives 23.3 gal/day; at the 16 A setting it reaches 34.6 gal/day. It needs a dedicated circuit, with a 20 A breaker at the 11.5 A setting or 25 A at the 16 A setting, plus a water supply and a drain. The Model 80 canister is replaced every year or when the Service light flashes; the 5-year warranty doesn't cover it.
