Is it the right size for your home?
It puts 12 gallons of water a day into the air (with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air), enough to humidify up to 1,200 sq ft according to the manufacturer. Pick your home's living area.
It's the right size.
For a condo or house under 900 sq ft, it's within its range. It will run at part load on ordinary days and keep a reserve for the coldest days.
Area published by Clean Comfort for an average-construction home. For a very tight home, Clean Comfort gives 2,000 sq ft. Older or leaky house: go one size up; our estimator confirms it on site.
What it does, in numbers
Output: manufacturer's spec (12 gal/day, with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air).
What you should know about this one
Published, verifiable figures, not brochure claims.
12 galWhat it produces per day, at full output
About 45 litres of water turned into humidity in 24 hours. The control runs it to match the humidity you set: it rarely runs flat out, except in very cold weather.
Heat pumpBehind a heat pump, it produces less
It evaporates water from a pad using the heat of the air coming off the furnace. A heat pump blows cooler air, so it evaporates less. With a heat pump, talk to our estimator: depending on the manufacturer, we connect it to hot water or suggest a steam model instead.
MManual humidistat version
M is the version shipped with the manual humidistat. Its parts warranty is 10 years, against 5 for the second-generation HE12M2.
9⅛ in.The opening it needs
A 9⅛ × 8¾ in. opening, on the warm-air or return plenum, left or right. 6 in. bypass duct.
ControlThe control that comes with it
HEP-MHX3C manual humidistat.
UpkeepWhat gets replaced, and when
HEP-GA10 Vapor Pad.
35%The humidity to aim for in winter, at most
At −7 °C, no more than 35%; at −18 °C, no more than 25%. Above that, the moisture condenses on the windows. The control adjusts for you if it has an outdoor sensor.
10 yearsThe manufacturer's warranty, and what it covers
10 years on the humidifier's parts, 1 year on accessories. We register the warranty in your name at start-up.

Clean Comfort HE12M: a compact bypass humidifier with a manual humidistat
The HE12M mounts on the plenum of a forced-air furnace. Warm air passes through a wet pad and goes back into the ducts carrying moisture. It produces 12 gal/day with 49 °C (120 °F) furnace air. It suits a home up to 1,200 sq ft according to the manufacturer, for average construction.
What sets it apart
- M stands for manual: it ships with the HEP-MHX3C manual humidistat. You adjust the setting yourself when the weather changes.
- A small cabinet: 11.88 × 9.5 × 13.38 in. and 7 lb. The opening is 9⅛ × 8¾ in., on the warm-air or return plenum, left or right.
- A 10-year warranty on the humidifier's parts, 1 year on accessories.
What it asks for on site
It needs a 6 in. bypass duct, a water line and a drain. The valve runs on 24 V. The only consumable is the HEP-GA10 Vapor Pad; check it every fall and replace it when it is loaded with scale. Like any evaporative unit, it relies on furnace heat: behind a heat pump the air is cooler and it produces less.
