What is a PTAC? Ten parts in a 42-inch box.

PTAC stands for Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner: an all-in-one air conditioner or heat pump that goes through the wall. Here is what is inside, part by part.

08 · Refrigerants

R-32, R-410A or R-454B: the refrigerants in our PTACs.

R-410A still dominates installed units; R-32 and R-454B are taking over with a much lower climate impact.

10 · Fresh air

PTAC and air exchanger: one heats, the other ventilates.

Heating and cooling, yes. Ventilating is an air exchanger’s job. Compare the three scenarios.

Blue: air treated by the PTACOrange: stale air leaving
The same air, heated or cooled. The PTAC circulates the room’s air over its coils. It goes through the filter, but no fresh air comes in: stale air stays.
