An important detail: 12,000 BTU in cooling does not mean 12,000 BTU of heating under all conditions
This is a distinction we often explain when preparing an HVAC quote.
In cooling mode, the SENPT-12AEN provides up to 12,000 BTU/h. In heat pump mode, the stated capacity is 10,800 / 10,500 BTU/h, with power consumption of 890 / 850 W and current of 5.0 / 5.3 A. The manufacturer specifies a COP of 3.2.
This means that under conditions where the heat pump can operate normally, it produces several units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. This is precisely the energy advantage of a heat pump over a resistive electric element.
However, the PTAC also has a 3.5 kW electric heating element. Its stated capacity reaches 10,900 / 8,900 BTU/h, with power consumption of 3,500 / 2,897 W and current of 15.3 / 13.7 A.
The difference is significant: electric heating consumes practically as much electricity as the heat it produces, whereas a heat pump moves heat from outdoors to indoors.
This PTAC is not a low-temperature heat pump rated for -25 °C or -30 °C
For the Montréal and Greater Montréal market, this point deserves particular attention.
The SENPT-12AEN documentation indicates an outdoor operating range of:
- cooling: 64 to 109 °F;
- heating: 23 to 76 °F.
The manufacturer also specifies a charge of 26.81 oz of R32.
In other words, the published lower operating limit in heating mode is approximately 23 °F, which is slightly below the freezing point.
We therefore would not present this model as equivalent to a cold-climate wall-mounted heat pump that can maintain heating at -25 °C or -30 °C.
In a Montréal building, the overall heating system must be planned accordingly. The PTAC does include an electric element, but a homeowner replacing a primary heating system must have the following properly assessed:
- the room's heating load;
- wall insulation;
- the windows;
- wind exposure;
- the floor area;
- the existing heating system;
- the needs during periods of intense cold.
This is exactly the kind of detail that prevents selecting equipment solely because the label says “heat pump.”
438 CFM: why airflow matters as much as BTUs
The indoor airflow reaches 438 CFM at high speed and 344 CFM at low speed.
CFM, or cubic feet per minute, indicates the volume of air moved by the fan.
For a PTAC, adequate airflow helps to:
- distribute cool air more quickly throughout a room;
- reduce temperature differences between two zones;
- improve heat transfer across the heat exchanger;
- limit excessively short cycles when the installation is properly sized;
- maintain acceptable air circulation in relatively long rooms.
However, more CFM does not automatically mean greater comfort.
The PTAC’s position is decisive. If a unit is installed behind a sofa, bed, piece of furniture, or thick curtain, some of the airflow may be short-circuited. The cool or warm air then returns too quickly to the unit’s intake without actually treating the entire room.
This is a problem we seek to eliminate during the planning stage.
Sound level: 51.5 to 52 dB(A) indoors
A PTAC has its compressor in the same housing as the indoor unit. Therefore, it cannot be directly compared with the sound level of a wall-mounted unit whose compressor is located outside.
For the SENPT-12AEN, Senville indicates:
- 51.5 dB(A) at low speed;
- 52 dB(A) at high speed;
- 67 dB(A) on the outdoor side.
The difference of only 0.5 dB between the two indoor speeds also shows that the total noise does not come solely from the fan. The mechanical assembly contributes to the sound level.
In a hotel room, studio apartment, or bedroom, we always consider the location of the bed and the distance between the occupant and the PTAC. Two installations with exactly the same unit can create a very different perception of sound simply because of the room layout.
R32: important information for a new generation of PTACs
The SENVILLE SENPT-12AEN operates with R32 refrigerant.
The documentation indicates a charge of 26.81 oz.
For the owner, this mainly means that installation, diagnostics, and any necessary repairs must be carried out using tools and procedures appropriate for the refrigerant used.
R32 belongs to the class of mildly flammable refrigerants. This does not make the unit problematic in a compliant installation, but it requires following the appropriate technical procedures when servicing the refrigeration circuit.
Since the PTAC is a factory-precharged self-contained unit, a standard installation does not require connecting a copper lineset as with a wall-mounted heat pump.
This is one of the practical advantages of the PTAC format.

Replacement in an existing PTAC opening: the most advantageous scenario
The SENPT-12AEN uses a standard PTAC format, and Senville indicates compatibility with standard PTAC wall openings. For a new installation, the wall sleeve and exterior grille are sold separately.
This information changes a lot of things on a job site.

Even when an opening appears standard, a few millimeters or a deformation in an old sleeve can complicate the replacement.
A proper installation must also prevent water infiltration, drafts, and vibrations transmitted to the wall.
Replacing a PTAC is not simply a matter of “removing the old one and sliding in the new one”
This is a common mistake in buildings where PTACs have been installed for fifteen or twenty years.
An old casing may have:
- corrosion;
- a partially blocked exterior grille;

PTAC or ductless heat pump: the two solutions meet different needs

The air is warm, but the electricity bill is increasing sharply
It is necessary to determine whether the unit is still heating primarily through the heat pump or whether the 3.5 kW electric element is operating much more often.
This distinction is particularly important in our climate.
The noise or vibrations have increased
A PTAC weighing more than 110 lb installed in a poorly supported sleeve can transmit vibrations to the wall. An inspection can distinguish a mechanical problem from a support or installation problem.
