What it does, in numbers
$17.31
Cooling, all summer
Less than a 60 W light bulb
Bulbs left on day and night for a year. Cooling: 5 h a day for 40 days, the assumption used by Hydro-Québec's air-conditioning calculator. Same calculation for every line: wattage × hours × 11.142 ¢/kWh.
≈$99
Heating, all winter
≈ $8 less than baseboard heaters
Typical 135 sq ft room with one exterior wall, in Montréal: 964 kWh of heat per winter (Environment Canada 1991–2020 climate normals). The heat pump is counted only at 8 °C and warmer, where Gree rates its output; below that, the heater, at the price of a baseboard. If it keeps heating in colder weather, the bill goes down.
≈ $117 for the year, before tax. Winter is 85% of it. If your home stays in the first tier of Rate D in summer (7.065 ¢/kWh), cooling drops to $10.98.
Capacities and currents: Gree PTAC II ETAC2 service manual (R-410A). Power draw: 777 W in cooling (9,400 BTU/h ÷ EER 12.1), 695 W in heat-pump mode, 3,450 W on the 3.5 kW heater. Hydro-Québec Rate D in effect since April 1, 2026: 11.142 ¢/kWh second tier, before tax.
What you should know about this one
Published, verifiable facts, not brochure claims.
9,400What it really delivers in cooling
The name says 9,000 BTU: that's the unit's size class. Gree publishes 9,400 BTU/h at 230 V, a little more than its size class, and 9,200 at 208 V, the supply in many buildings.
3,450 WThe heater that takes over
Gree publishes a heater of up to 3.5 kW for this model: 3,450 W at 230 V, 2,820 W at 208 V. The size installed follows the power cord (NEMA 6-15P, 6-20P). It heats when the heat pump can no longer keep up.
3.5The COP published at 8 °C
Gree publishes a heat-pump COP of 3.5: 8,300 BTU/h of heat at 230 V. Each kWh you pay for gives back 3.5 in heat, against 1 for the heater or a baseboard.
50 dBThe noise at low speed
50 dB(A) at low speed, 52 at high speed, as published by Gree. In a bedroom, that's the number that decides the complaints: the unit runs at night, two metres from the bed.
2.11Pints of water it removes per hour
The dehumidification Gree publishes in cooling mode: 2.11 pints per hour. It's what keeps a room comfortable in summer without it turning clammy.
6-20PThe outlet it needs
With the 3.5 kW heater: a NEMA 6-20P plug on a dedicated 20 A circuit. With 2.5 kW: 6-15P on 15 A. In a replacement, the outlet already in the wall dictates the heater size.
What it needs on site
In a replacement, we check the outlet and the breaker first: they set the heater size you can use. Our estimator confirms the sleeve, the outlet and the slope before ordering.
