A slight temperature variation can have major consequences in a highly sensitive environment like a pharmaceutical laboratory. At AirGreen, we were recently called in to intervene in an industrial building in Laval where a one-degree Celsius error was threatening the stability of several critical samples. This project not only highlights the importance of precise commercial air conditioning, but also demonstrates our ability to deliver tailored HVAC solutions for the most demanding environments.
When an Air Conditioning Failure Becomes an Industrial Risk
In this pharmaceutical lab located in Laval, the existing air conditioning system, poorly maintained and technologically outdated, could no longer maintain the required constant temperature of 20 ± 1 °C. On multiple occasions, fluctuations of up to 2.3 °C were recorded, endangering the stability of sensitive compounds stored in non-refrigerated enclosures.
These fluctuations were putting weeks of scientific research at risk, as well as threatening compliance with health and safety regulations applicable in the pharmaceutical industry. The facility manager contacted us urgently, fully aware that every minute counted.
In-Depth Diagnosis and Rapid Response
Our first step was a complete analysis of the existing HVAC system, which included:
-
24-hour thermographic readings;
-
An inspection of the air ducts;
-
A calibration check of the thermostats and sensors;
-
An indoor air quality analysis.
Our diagnosis revealed an improperly sized existing system, significant leaks in the ducts, and poorly positioned sensors causing inaccurate readings.
The Proposed Solution: Installation of a Fujitsu Air Conditioning System Designed for Sensitive Environments
To meet the lab’s strict thermal requirements, we recommended and installed a high-precision Fujitsu VRF system, model Airstage V-III R-32, with a capacity of 36,000 BTU, featuring:
-
High-precision thermal sensors with dual-point reading;
-
Centralized control through a secure web interface;
-
Redundancy of indoor units to avoid interruptions in case of failure;
-
An alarm system triggered by any temperature drift exceeding 0.5 °C.
This system is specifically designed for critical environments such as laboratories, clean rooms, and pharmaceutical production zones.
Technical Challenges and Solutions Implemented
The installation came with several challenges:
-
Requirement not to interrupt lab operations: we performed the work at night over four consecutive days.
-
Installation in a ceiling void only 80 cm high: we used compact units with spiral flexible ducts.
-
Precise thermostat calibration: each room was equipped with a wall-mounted sensor and a floating ambient sensor, all synchronized with the central interface.
Observed Results
Since commissioning, temperatures in the lab's various zones have remained stable within ± 0.3 °C, and relative humidity—another critical factor—has been maintained between 45% and 50%. Staff quickly noticed an improvement in the consistency of working conditions, while managers pointed out a significant reduction in the risk of material losses.
Client Feedback
The operations director shared the following:
“Before AirGreen’s intervention, we were in a critical situation. Thanks to their methodical approach and their ability to offer a solution truly adapted to our reality, we’ve secured our research environment.”
What This Case Teaches Us About Commercial Air Conditioning
Inadequate air conditioning in a sensitive environment can cost tens of thousands of dollars in production losses, wasted samples, or worse—regulatory non-compliance.
At AirGreen, we understand that every degree counts. Our interventions aim to guarantee the stability, safety, and performance of your professional spaces, no matter how complex they are.
Our Tips for Climate-Critical Environments
Here are some practical recommendations if you manage a lab, clean room, or any space that requires precise temperature control:
-
Have your sensors calibrated every 6 months;
-
Install an HVAC system with automatic redundancy to prevent unexpected downtime;
-
Opt for systems with remote control and data history;
-
Choose an experienced installer capable of managing industrial thermal demands.
