A Floating HVAC Installation: Technical Expertise Meets Innovation on Laval’s Waters
At AirGreen, we believe every challenge is an opportunity to innovate. And sometimes, those challenges go beyond the beaten path… or rather, beyond traditional foundations. Recently, our team was called in to carry out an HVAC installation on a houseboat, docked in Laval, on the North Shore of Greater Montréal. A rare, atypical, and highly technical project that allowed us to showcase our specialized expertise in wall-mounted air conditioners, even in non-traditional environments.
Why Cool a Houseboat? The Unique Comfort Challenges of Living on Water
Life on the water offers a peaceful and unique living experience, but it also comes with specific thermal challenges. In summer, houseboats are subject to intense heat due to the sun’s reflection on the water and the lack of shade. Without air conditioning, maintaining indoor comfort quickly becomes difficult. Furthermore, given the limited space, the chosen HVAC solution had to be compact, quiet, efficient, and above all resistant to ambient humidity.
Technical Specs of the Installed Equipment
For this project, we recommended and installed a Midea Blanc 9,000 BTU wall-mounted air conditioner, a model known for its reliability, energy efficiency, and compact size—perfect for small spaces. Here are the main features of the unit:
-
9,000 BTU, ideal for a room of 300 to 400 sq. ft.
-
Inverter technology for stable and economical performance
-
Advanced air filtration, ideal for marine environments
-
Built-in dehumidification function
-
Noise level below 20 dB, perfect for quiet nights on board
-
Eligible for certain LogisVert energy-efficiency grants, under specific conditions
A Mobile, Unstable Environment: How to Successfully Install HVAC on a Boat?
1. Preliminary Structural Assessment
First, our experts performed a structural analysis of the houseboat to ensure that the walls could support a wall-mounted unit. The indoor unit was mounted on a reinforced central wall, while the outdoor unit was installed on the rear deck, using a custom-designed anti-vibration platform.
2. Anchoring the Outdoor Unit on a Floating Surface
One of the biggest challenges was the lightweight deck, combined with movement caused by waves and wind. We designed a stabilizing anchor plate, bolted to the deck using anti-corrosion stainless steel fasteners. A marine-grade vibration damper was also integrated to prevent resonance or premature wear.
3. Piping and Power Supply
The electrical wiring, refrigerant tubing, and condensate drain were routed through a watertight casing resistant to splashes and ambient moisture. A marine-grade GFCI breaker was added to secure the setup, in full compliance with electrical safety standards for nautical environments.
The Result: A Fully Functional Wall-Mounted Air Conditioner… Even on the Water
The Midea 9,000 BTU wall-mounted air conditioner fits perfectly into the interior layout of the houseboat, without disrupting flow or ergonomics. The outdoor unit, discreet and well-protected, operates quietly, even at night. The owner immediately noticed a significant improvement in comfort, from the very first hot days.
Testimonial from the Owner: “AirGreen Did the Impossible on My Boat”
This project, according to the client, had been deemed “unfeasible” by other HVAC contractors. He was eager to highlight our attentiveness, adaptability, and especially our ability to engineer viable technical solutions in a mobile and marine environment. “I never imagined a system this effective could be installed on a boat—silent and with no compromises.”
