Air Quality and Premature Aging: The Scientific Truth That Will Make You Think Twice

The air you breathe at home could be accelerating your aging — and you may not even know it

At AirGreen, we spend our days servicing homes across Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, improving indoor air quality through the installation of high-performance air exchangers. And what we discover, day after day, continues to confirm what several scientific studies are now making increasingly clear: polluted indoor air may be contributing to premature aging.

This is not an exaggeration. The link between long-term exposure to stale indoor air and accelerated aging at the cellular level is now well-documented. And the good news? Concrete solutions exist — and they can be implemented today.

An invisible reality: indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air

Contrary to popular belief, pollutant concentrations are often higher indoors than outdoors. Fine particles, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, CO2, mold — all of these pollutants circulate in the very rooms where we live, sleep, and breathe daily.

The consequences? Fatigue, respiratory issues, but also — according to several studies conducted in Europe and Canada — accelerated cellular aging, compromised immune function, and chronic inflammation.

Premature aging: a phenomenon linked to oxidative stress

Scientists agree that long-term exposure to certain pollutants — especially PM2.5 (fine particles smaller than 2.5 microns) — generates oxidative stress, a process where cells are attacked by free radicals.

This stress leads to:

  • DNA damage in cells

  • Reduced tissue regeneration

  • Early onset of chronic illness

  • Visible signs of aging (skin, fatigue, cognition)

In a Laval home where we recently conducted a full air quality audit, we measured a PM2.5 level above 30 µg/m³ — well beyond Health Canada’s recommended average of 5 µg/m³ annually. After installing a Venmar EVO5 700 HRV air exchanger, that number dropped to 5.4 µg/m³, bringing the indoor air back to a healthy range.

Scientific studies support it: indoor air affects your longevity

A study published by the University of Toronto in 2022 showed a direct link between exposure to high levels of PM2.5 and a significant reduction in telomere length — the protective caps of our chromosomes, which are biological markers of aging.

Another report, conducted at the University of Montréal, found that residents of poorly ventilated homes showed earlier signs of cognitive aging than those living in properly ventilated environments.

At AirGreen, we see this reality in the field every single day

Our team was called to Saint-Eustache, on the North Shore, by a retired couple who reported frequent migraines, poor sleep, and a constant feeling of fatigue. Upon inspection, we found that their home, built in 2005, had no air renewal system whatsoever. CO2 levels were over 1800 ppm.

We installed a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) with smart sensors, along with HEPA filtration in the main ducts. The results: significantly improved sleep, mood, and energy for the couple… and more importantly, a measurable drop in indoor pollutants.

How do you know if your indoor air is harming your health?

Here are a few red flags:

  • Chronic fatigue without any clear reason

  • Frequent headaches

  • Dry skin, dull complexion

  • Respiratory issues even without known allergens

  • Unrefreshing sleep

These symptoms, often blamed on stress or aging, may actually be caused by stale or contaminated indoor air.

Solutions provided by AirGreen

For every home, we offer a customized solution based on square footage, layout, and lifestyle:

  • Installation of a suitable HRV or ERV air exchanger (Venmar, Lennox, Lifebreath, etc.)

  • Complete duct cleaning to remove dust or mold buildup

  • Airflow calibration to ensure proper balance between exhaust and intake

  • HEPA or activated carbon filters based on specific needs (allergies, pets, smoke, etc.)

All our services in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore are carried out by certified technicians, using professional-grade measurement equipment and a constant focus on transparency and long-lasting effectiveness.

What you can do today

  1. Request a professional indoor air quality assessment — it’s fast, non-invasive, and incredibly revealing

  2. Change your HVAC filters regularly (every 3 to 6 months)

  3. Air out your home for at least 15 minutes a day

  4. Avoid heavily scented or chemical cleaning products

  5. Invest in a high-performance air exchanger, especially if your home is new and airtight
