An optimized urban installation on a balcony: silence, performance and simplified access
At AirGreen , we adapt each HVAC installation to the Montreal built environment. In this Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie plex, we are installing an Ameristar wall-mounted heat pump whose outdoor unit sits on a metal balcony platform. The site offers advantages—proximity to the indoor head, short connection routes—but also constraints: air clearances to be respected , vibrations to be controlled, passages in a tubular railing, management of the condensate drain in air conditioning mode, and direct exposure to winter wind. Our team addresses these points methodically to offer a discreet, durable, and easy-to-maintain system.
Client background and objectives
-
Type of dwelling : brick plex with metal balconies, backyard and narrow driveway.
-
Needs : efficient summer air conditioning of an open living space and supplementary heating in the off-season, while containing electricity consumption.
-
Constraints : limited outdoor space, close proximity, noise and clearance standards to be respected, aesthetic passages of refrigerant lines .
What makes the difference in our approach
1) Choice of location and air clearances
We fix the outdoor unit to a rigid balcony platform , flush with the railing, to maintain a safe passage. We validate free clearances on the sides and front of the grille to prevent air recycling and preserve the defrosting capacity in winter. A false good idea is to "stick" the machine against a wall or a solid railing: the unit becomes noisy and loses efficiency. Here, we maintain a clear air field towards the rear aisle.
2) Control of vibrations and noise
Metal balcony structures can transmit vibrations. We install:
-
High density anti-vibration pads under the base of the device;
-
Spacers and torque tightening to stiffen the platform;
-
Check fan unbalance and flatness to reduce resonance frequencies.
Result: quiet operation for both the home and the neighborhood.
3) Short and clean route of the connections
The refrigerant path is optimized: outlet on the right of the unit, rigid UV casing (color matching the brick) and wall inlet towards the indoor head. A short path reduces pressure losses, secures compressor lubrication and facilitates possible future interventions. We install:
-
Closed cell insulated copper , stainless steel collar;
-
Compliant communication cable and dedicated power supply ;
-
Waterproof penetration seal with vapor barrier to prevent infiltration of humid air.
4) Condensate management
In air conditioning mode, the water produced inside must flow by gravity. Here, the head is close to the facade, which allows for a discreet gravity drain . In the event of an unfavorable level difference, we integrate a silent micro-condensate pump with an anti-overflow tray. On this project, the gravity flow was validated with supporting tests, for a simpler and more reliable system.
5) Winter protection and HVAC maintenance
Montreal imposes frost, ice, and gusts. To ensure safe operation:
-
Checking defrost slopes so that ice does not accumulate under the unit;
-
Sufficient clearance under the base to drain thawing water;
-
Recommendation of a gentle flushing of the condenser in the spring and annual maintenance by our HVAC maintenance teams.
Why Ameristar in wall configuration?
The Ameristar wall-mounted heat pump offers excellent value for money for apartments and plexes in Greater Montreal. It includes:
-
Inverter technology to modulate power according to actual demand;
-
Very good seasonal performance in air conditioning and supplementary heating;
-
Soft start limiting electrical peaks;
-
Simple remote control, “night” modes and automatic defrosting.
For readers comparing ranges, we remind you that sizing is not just about "marketing" BTUs. Our method combines load calculations , orientation , thermal envelope , and occupancy habits. Here, a nominal capacity around 12,000 BTUs is suitable for the intended open living area, while ensuring comfortable interseasonal heating.
Grants and Eligibility
Some wall-mounted heat pumps are eligible for assistance when they meet recognized performance levels. Depending on the exact configuration and current technical data sheets, we work with the customer to validate eligibility for programs available in Quebec. Our team supports the process for Montreal, Laval , Longueuil , North Shore , and South Shore .
Key steps of installation (AirGreen process)
-
On-site validation : measurements, anchor points in the masonry, condition of the balcony, layout of the holes.
-
Site protection : dust covers, low-vibration drilling, brick-friendly anchors .
-
Installation of the platform : plumb check, torque tightening, anti-vibration pads.
-
Installation of the outdoor unit : checking clearances to the guardrail and the facade.
-
Drawing lines : bends respecting minimum radii, flaring, nut torques, high vacuum and nitrogen leak test.
-
Electrical connection : dedicated circuit breaker, communication wiring, test report.
-
Start-up and configuration : checking pressures , intensity, superheating/subcooling , mode calibration.
-
Customer discount : maintenance instructions, winter tips (snow removal, interior filters), and reminder of HVAC maintenance visits.
Specific points of attention for balcony installations
-
Clearance from railings : avoid solid panels in front of the grille; if necessary, we offset the base or create an openwork deflector to direct the flow.
-
Runoff management : plan for the evacuation of defrosting water to avoid creating ice patches on the stairs.
-
Service accessibility : leave a passage for opening the hoods, accessing the valves and electronics.
-
Coactivity with other units : in this case, another condenser is present further away on the balcony; we avoid air short circuits between devices by respecting a minimum center distance and consistent heights.
Measurable results for the client
-
Comfort : rapid drop in indoor temperature during heatwaves, stable maintenance during the off-season without overconsumption.
-
Silence : thanks to the pads and the precise adjustment of the support, the vibrations perceived in the home and at the neighbor's are almost zero.
-
Aesthetics : aligned hood, harmonized color, clean passage of holes.
-
Sustainability : protected installation, clear access for after-sales service , complete documentation provided to the owner.
Recommendations for use and maintenance
-
Clean the inner head filters every 4 to 6 weeks during periods of heavy use.
-
Clear the outer grille of leaves and dust at the beginning of summer; rinse gently with water.
-
In winter, keep the perimeter around the base free of snow ; do not obstruct the front face with objects or canvases.
-
Schedule an annual maintenance with our AirGreen technicians (electrical and refrigeration checks, deep cleaning, parameter updates).
