Four-season comfort, precisely placed in a Montreal apartment

At AirGreen , we have just completed the HVAC installation of a Gree Clivia R32 wall-mounted heat pump in a typical Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension apartment. The owner wanted to stabilize the temperature of the main rooms throughout the year, reduce his electricity bill and maintain a clean aesthetic in an interior with light walls and relatively high ceilings. Our recommendation was the Gree Clivia R32 , a new generation wall-mounted head that is compact, quiet and adapted to the climatic realities of Greater Montreal.

What we achieved, step by step

Measurement and sizing. We begin each project with a precise survey: volumes to be treated, necessary airflows, window orientation, air infiltration, wall and ceiling insulation. In this home, the living area is open, with a side corridor that promotes air circulation towards the bedroom; a sizing of 12,000 to 15,000 BTU for the main head proved optimal.

Interior head placement. The Gree Clivia R32 head was installed at the top of the wall, near a corner, above a wall-mounted light fixture. This position offers three advantages:

  • better stratification for heating in winter (blowing directed towards the ground),

  • effective horizontal sweep to cool the living area in summer,

  • very short connection path to the outside, limiting losses and cycle time.

Through-hole and routing. A single, small-diameter hole was made behind the right-hand casing of the unit to pass the refrigerant lines, condensate drain and communication cable . The route was designed to be as direct as possible : approximately 35–50 cm of wall penetration, then a short external descent towards the compressor, under white capping to ensure a clean and durable finish.

Condensate management. The site's layout allows for gravity drainage ; no pump is required, which reduces maintenance and eliminates any additional noise. The slope was checked with a bubble to prevent any backflow.

Brazing, vacuuming and testing. After assembly, our technicians proceeded to:

  • a deep vacuum to remove moisture and non-condensables,

  • a leak and pressure test ,

  • commissioning with reading of parameters (inlet/outlet temperatures, compressor intensity, delta T),

  • the calibration of sweep and fan speeds for this room geometry.

Why the Gree Clivia R32 fits so well in Villeray

Design and silence. The interior module features clean lines that blend into a neutral decor. The airflow is even thanks to the motorized shutters and the fine-pitch fan. At low speed, the noise level is barely perceptible , ideal for an open-plan living room.

Next-generation efficiency and refrigerant. The Clivia R32 range uses R-32 refrigerant , which is more efficient and has a lower GWP than R-410A, promoting high efficiency in air conditioning and heating. Inverter motors adjust power according to actual demand, which limits on/off cycles and reduces consumption .

Cold weather performance. Designed for the Quebec climate, the Clivia R32 maintains stable heating during moderate to severe cold. Combined with a well-sealed enclosure, it ensures consistent comfort in high-traffic areas and adjacent rooms.

Filtration and maintenance. The washable filters are accessible without tools. We provided the client with a simplified HVAC maintenance schedule : monthly dusting during periods of heavy use, and thorough cleaning of the coils and fan by our teams depending on usage (usually annually).

Key technical details of this installation

  • Machine type: single-zone wall-mounted heat pump (mini-split).

  • Line routes: short and direct, short total length limiting pressure losses.

  • Interior finish: discreet white capping , perfectly aligned with the unit; no visible bleeding.

  • Condensate drainage: gravity , controlled slope.

  • Power supply: dedicated circuit from the panel; circuit breaker compliant with the intensity required by the chosen power.

  • External support: brackets adapted to the cladding, with anti-vibration silent blocks and sufficient ground clearance for snow.

  • Functional tests: reading of delta T in cold and hot conditions, checking of sweeping and speeds , test of simulated cold defrosting .

Results: immediate comfort, bill under control

Upon commissioning, the customer noted:

  • a rapid drop in indoor temperature during the following summer day,

  • even blowing without aggressive air currents thanks to the adjustment of the shutters,

  • heating stability on a cooler night, without annoying temperature variations.

Thanks to the correct sizing and the short path , the compressor works in its optimal efficiency zone , which results in measured consumption and contained external noise for the neighborhood.

Grants and Compliance

New-generation, high-efficiency R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps may be eligible for current programs (depending on capacity, certifications, and eligibility requirements). We support our clients in:

  • verification of criteria ,

  • drafting of installation documents ,

  • and the claim file where applicable.
This support is part of our turnkey service in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and the South Shore .

AirGreen best practices and advice

  • Choosing an interior location: aim for a clear wall, at a good height, to allow a wide sweep and avoid obstacles (thick curtains, columns).

  • Drainage: favor gravity as soon as the configuration allows it; the pump is only used as a last resort.

  • Line lengths: keep it as short as possible , limit sharp bends, insulate well to avoid droplets in summer.

  • Annual maintenance: Professional cleaning of the coils and turbine fan maintains efficiency and air quality.

  • Winter: Clear the outdoor unit of snow and check that air is circulating freely around the condenser.

What we check on a job like this one

Each number is a point we check on site. Switch between summer and winter to watch air and heat move.

Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

    1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

    2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

    3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

    4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

    5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

    6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

    7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

    Frequently asked questions

What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
