Four-season comfort, careful finishing and discretion in co-ownership
Context: a bright condo just steps from the metro
At AirGreen , we were commissioned to equip a condo in Laval-des-Rapides with a Sharp Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump . The living space opens onto a large patio door giving access to a balcony, with a blue bay window characteristic of the buildings in the area. The owner was looking for rapid cooling in the summer , comfortable additional heating in the spring and fall, and above all, a discreet integration that respected the rules of the co-ownership.
Choosing the right device: a Sharp wall-mounted unit is a sure bet
The Sharp Eco Inverter perfectly meets the constraints of an urban condo:
-
Inverter modulation to maintain a stable temperature without jolts;
-
Low noise levels , appreciated in co-ownership;
-
Sharp's own air treatment technology , practical for improving perceived comfort;
-
Compatibility with the climatic requirements of Greater Montreal .
Depending on the layout and insulation, we typically size between 9,000 and 18,000 BTUs for a living room open to the kitchen. Accurate sizing prevents over-equipment, reduces short cycles , and improves seasonal efficiency.
Interior integration: head above the patio door, homogeneous diffusion
We positioned the head above the patio door , clear of any obstacles, in order to sweep the air along the ceiling and then naturally return it to the living area. This layout:
-
optimizes air stratification and mixing;
-
frees up useful walls for furnishings;
-
simplifies crossing the wall to the balcony.
The refrigeration path takes a short route to the right of the unit. The connections are insulated and properly sheathed , the bend radius is respected, and the drilling is carried out at a controlled slope to allow gravity flow of condensate to the outside when the configuration lends itself to it. This detail avoids the addition of a pump, limits noise and reduces maintenance .
Finishing and protection of connections
In apartments, aesthetics count. We protect the lines with a tight, clean, and continuous white sheath , then—when required by regulations or the client—with rigid decorative capping that standardizes the finish and protects the insulation from impacts. The fasteners are distributed to eliminate hard points and prevent any vibration noise on the partition.
Outdoor installation: accessibility, discretion and clearances
The outdoor unit is installed on the balcony , directly above the wall crossing to shorten the lengths and limit the bends . We prefer a raised support in aluminum or galvanized steel with anti-vibration pads , in order to:
-
detach the device from the structure;
-
protect from meltwater and snow;
-
maintain compliant rear and side clearances , essential for air conditioning performance and defrosting in winter.
The air supply is oriented to prevent air from flowing back onto the façade and to preserve the peace and quiet of the neighbors. The external electrical disconnect switch is installed within easy reach, as required for safety and ease of maintenance.
Power supply, control and safety
The heat pump is powered by a dedicated circuit with the recommended circuit breaker rating . The connections are crimped , tested and protected in the provided boxes. We check the polarity , grounding , currents at different speeds and voltage stability before delivery to the customer.
Commissioning: the steps that make the difference
Our standard commissioning protocol includes:
-
Nitrogen leak test and leak detection;
-
Deep vacuum to remove moisture and residual air;
-
Opening of valves and stabilization, control of pressures and temperatures ;
-
Measurement of delta T when blowing in cold/heat modes, verification of sweeping and speeds;
-
Thawing and restart settings and explanations of use to the customer.
These steps guarantee reliability , efficiency and longevity of the compressor.
Result: perceived comfort and controlled silence
-
Uniform cooling of the open area, including the kitchen area;
-
Rapid temperature rise in the off-season, ideal during late frosts in Laval;
-
Very low noise level , both inside and on the balcony;
-
Easy maintenance thanks to direct access to the filters and the outdoor unit.
Best practices for condos and co-ownerships
We regularly work in co-ownerships in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and the South Shore . Before work, we validate:
-
the position of the devices (distance from guardrails, clearances);
-
the method of condensate evacuation (gravity prioritized, pump if necessary);
-
permissible noise levels and working hours ;
-
visual harmony (capping colors, installation height).
AirGreen Technical Advice
-
Size right : Excessive capacity creates short cycles and humidity discomfort;
-
Reduce lengths and elbows to preserve cooling capacity ;
-
Anti-vibration devices are mandatory on balconies to prevent transmission through the structure;
-
Defrosting : preserve rear clearances, do not enclose the unit;
-
HVAC maintenance : periodic cleaning of filters, visual inspection of connections and the disconnector .
Maintenance and monitoring: maintaining performance
Annual HVAC maintenance is recommended:
-
dusting and gentle washing of filters ;
-
cleaning the internal exchanger ;
-
control of capping and fasteners ;
-
checking the condensate drainage ;
-
inspection of the support and the pads outside.
We offer maintenance packages tailored to high-rise residences, with quick turnaround times and intervention without disturbing neighbors.
Subsidies and energy efficiency
Recent, high-performance wall-mounted heat pumps are generally eligible for assistance programs, subject to performance criteria. We support our clients in Greater Montreal to document the installation , gather the necessary evidence , and optimize the file when the chosen equipment meets the required thresholds.
Pitfalls to avoid (feedback)
-
Drilling without sufficient slope towards the outside: risk of droplets and odors;
-
Ignore accessibility to the outdoor unit (cleaning, service);
-
Underestimate the impact of sound reflections on balcony windows;
-
Overtighten the sheath clamps: noise and localized wear;
-
Position the head in a lateral air corridor which short-circuits the diffusion.
