The tour

Take a tour of the installation

Each number is a point we check on site. Switch between summer and winter to watch air and heat move.

Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

The job

Reliable winter performance on flat roofs, signed AirGreen

In the heart of Plateau-Mont-Royal , we are commissioning a Sharp Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump for a Montreal plex apartment. The compressor is installed on the flat gravel roof , at the right height, to ensure stable operation in all seasons and preserve the occupants' peace of mind. This project illustrates our approach to each urban HVAC installation : careful preparation, technical choices adapted to Montreal's buildings, and a clean finish that respects the aesthetics and durability of the building.

Housing context and comfort objectives

The apartment features an open-plan living space with adjoining bedrooms. Clients are looking for a four-season, economical, and discreet system that can efficiently cool in the summer and provide additional heating in the winter, without noise or vibration being transmitted indoors. The Sharp Eco Inverter meets these expectations with its variable-speed compressor and quiet wall-mounted fan, offering an excellent performance/consumption ratio for mid-sized apartments in Greater Montreal .

Our method: precision, safety, durability

Installation on a flat roof

  • Roof-mounted support : We use a galvanized steel frame mounted on protective sole plates to prevent any perforation of the membrane. Anti-vibration pads mechanically decouple the unit to limit the transmission of structure-borne noise.

  • Useful elevation : the ground clearance ensures snow clearance and free flow of defrost water. In windy urban areas, this elevation also reduces the suction of dust and gravel.

  • Compliance with clearances : the orientation leaves a clear corridor in front of the condenser battery to maintain the required air flow during winter defrost cycles.

Refrigeration path and sealing

  • Sealed feedthrough : the insulated refrigeration lines and the power supply are grouped together in a technical cover, with sealing using membrane-compatible mastic and metal flashing . The objective is twofold: durable sealing and easy maintenance.

  • Optimized length : On this type of plex, the roof → interior head distance is generally in a short to medium range, which is beneficial for efficiency and refrigerant charge. We avoid unnecessary bends, which reduces pressure losses and facilitates any future maintenance.

  • Condensate management : the internal head is installed with a gravity drain when the configuration allows it. In constrained configurations, we integrate a silent condensate pump with a check valve and odor trap. Outside, the defrost flow remains free, away from passageways.

Power supply and protection

We connect the unit to a dedicated double-pole circuit breaker , in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code. A proximity switch (disconnect) on the roof allows safe disconnection for maintenance. The wiring is protected in a UV- and thermal-shock-resistant sheath, mechanically secured to withstand rooftop winds.

Finishing and integration

  • White interior capping for neat integration and quick maintenance.

  • Marking and labeling of lines for clear identification during future interventions.

  • Complete tests : sub-micron vacuum, nitrogen leak test , load checked according to actual length, then controlled start-up with verification of blowing/return temperatures and compressor intensity.

Why the Sharp Eco Inverter for a Montreal plex?

  • High-efficiency inverter : continuous modulation precisely adapts the power. Result: stable comfort , long cycles without jolts, contained consumption.

  • Operation in biting cold : the Eco Inverter series is designed for northern climates and maintains a good level of heating in low temperatures, ideal for Montreal , Laval and the exposed areas of the Plateau .

  • Quiet operation : optimized fan and isolated compressor limit disturbances for immediate neighbors and occupants.

  • Air Quality : Sharp's proprietary ionizing technology contributes to healthier indoor air when the head is equipped with the appropriate module.

  • Simplified maintenance : front access to the filter, clear diagnostics, and architecture that facilitates cleaning of the external battery on a flat roof.

Grants and savings

Due to its high seasonal efficiency and Energy Star certification across multiple capacities, this wall-mounted heat pump may be eligible for active grant programs in Quebec, depending on the capacity selected and current criteria. We assist our clients in validating eligibility for provincial and municipal programs and in preparing supporting documentation. Annual savings come from inverter modulation and heat transfer, which is significantly more efficient than electric baseboard heaters.

Construction site challenges… and our solutions

  • Wind and ice : On roofs, wind can increase the icing of the battery. We position the unit behind a parapet whenever possible, while maintaining regulatory clearances.

  • Structural noise : we mechanically decouple the chassis using silent blocks and distribute the load over wide bases . Vibrations are dampened, acoustic comfort is preserved.

  • Roof waterproofing : Each opening is treated with membrane-compatible flashings and approved sealants to prevent infiltration. Photographic documentation is provided to the client.

What the customer gains on a daily basis

  • Four-season comfort : consistent air conditioning in summer, efficient supplementary heating in the off-season and in severe cold.

  • Aesthetics preserved : no units on balconies or facades. The interior headboard remains discreet, the exterior is invisible from the street.

  • Controlled costs : modulation = more stable bills, optimized defrosting cycles, less mechanical stress and therefore increased durability .

Maintenance recommended by AirGreen

  • Filter cleaning : every 4 to 8 weeks during use.

  • Annual inspection : pressure check, cleaning of exchangers and checking of roof supports and wiring.

  • Winter clearance : even on a flat roof, keep the unit clear of snow and ice around the base to allow defrost condensate to drain away.

  • Indoor hygiene : periodic HVAC maintenance (gentle disinfection of the exchangers and the tank) maintains air quality and efficiency.

Your numbers

What would it look like at your place?

Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.

Size checkYour baseboards, in BTU/h
–BTU/h of installed electric heat

Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.

    Frequently asked questions

What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
