A balcony installation designed for the Montreal climate
At AirGreen , every HVAC installation is designed to deliver sustainable comfort in the realities of Montreal buildings. In Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie , we equipped an urban condo with a Sharp Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump . The condenser sits on a granite-like concrete balcony , protected from impacts and pedestrian traffic, while the indoor head directly serves the living area. The result: a compact, quiet, and energy-efficient solution, compliant with condominium regulations and the metropolitan climate.
Project context: condo, co-ownership and real constraints
The owner wanted a four-season system that would reduce electricity costs while improving thermal stability. The constraints were typical of a brick building:
-
outdoor space limited to the balcony;
-
close proximity requiring strict noise and vibration control;
-
visual cleanliness requirements (hood, neutral colors) set by the co-ownership association;
-
maintenance traffic to be preserved around window frames.
We offer a well-sized Sharp Eco Inverter monosplit for the main living areas, with reduced noise levels and fine compressor modulation.
Condenser positioning: elevated, stable and accessible
Tabletop support
Rather than using wall brackets, we opted for a tabletop stand placed on the balcony floor. This choice has several advantages:
-
floor clearance for frost drainage in winter;
-
excellent mechanical stability and load distribution;
-
vibrations contained thanks to anti-vibration pads under the feet and under the base of the device;
-
easy access for maintenance without a cradle or anchoring to the facade.
Clearances and safety
The condenser is installed with the recommended distances at the rear, sides, and front to ensure optimal airflow. We ensure alignment with the window: the unit blows from the front, away from the glazing to avoid any recycling of hot air in winter or vibrations transmitted to the woodwork.
Refrigerated and electric journey: short, clean and sustainable
-
The refrigeration lines (insulated copper) take a direct route through the balcony wall to the indoor unit, minimizing the equivalent length and therefore the pressure losses .
-
The UV cover protects copper and cables, in a color coordinated with the facade for discreet integration.
-
An external disconnect switch is located within easy reach, in accordance with Quebec electrical requirements, to ensure safe maintenance work .
-
The indoor unit's condensate drain is gravity- fed to the outside, with a continuous slope and frost protection where required, to prevent backflow.
Frost and water management: think winter first
Montreal requires the installation to be designed around defrost cycles. Our elevated configuration offers:
-
a free space under the appliance so that the defrost water can drain away without stagnating;
-
the possibility of adding a discreet deflector if the evacuation must be directed towards a specific point on the balcony;
-
a stable platform that prevents the device from “sticking” to the gel.
Controlled noise and vibrations
Co-ownerships have a poor tolerance for noise pollution. We address three levels:
-
Source : choice of a modulating Sharp (inverter) and tightening to the torque using a dynamometer to avoid micro-leaks which force the compressor.
-
Transmission : buffers under the support points, flexible service loop on the lines so as not to mechanically stiffen the chassis.
-
Reception : positioning away from resonant angles (rigid corners where the sound is amplified) and validation of the sound level during commissioning.
Waterproofing and durability of the envelope
The holes are drilled properly using a corer , then sealed with polyurethane and sealant suitable for the materials (brick/concrete). Inside, we close the insulation and ensure the continuity of the air barrier , which contributes to the overall performance of the heat pump and the comfort of the condo.
Results, performance and interview framework
Seasonal sizing and performance
The choice of capacity – in the usual ranges of 9,000 / 12,000 / 18,000 BTU for this type of application – comes from a calculation taking into account:
-
of the surface area served and internal gains (occupancy, devices);
-
the sealing of the housing and the orientation;
-
local external conditions .
The Sharp Eco Inverter's continuous modulation provides consistent comfort : fewer short cycles, better dehumidification in summer, and remarkable stability in mid-season. In winter, the machine maintains useful capacity down to low temperatures, limiting the need for electric baseboard heaters.
Perceived comfort and consumption
Upon commissioning, the customer notes:
-
a rapid increase in comfort in the living area;
-
a contained noise on the balcony as well as inside;
-
controlled consumption thanks to the inverter and the short cooling cycle .
Automatic restart and optimized defrost functions enhance reliability during cold peaks and after power outages.
Commissioning: our method
Our technicians apply a strict sequence which guarantees the longevity of the refrigeration circuit:
-
Calibrated flares and torques checked by dynamometer.
-
Nitrogen pressurization and control with foaming solution then electronic detector .
-
Deep vacuum (≤ 500 microns), maintenance and ascent test .
-
Fluid release, validation of overheating / subcooling , measurement of intensity and supply/return temperatures .
-
Comfort settings (speeds, modes) according to the usual occupancy of the premises.
Preventive maintenance: simple, but essential
To maintain performance:
-
FILTERS : clean every 4 to 8 weeks during use.
-
OUTDOOR UNIT : seasonal visual inspection, leaf/snow clearance, checking the flatness of the support and pads .
-
ANNUAL : battery washing, line insulation check, pressure/temperature measurements, hood update.
-
WINTER : Ensure that defrost water does not accumulate; adjust the deflector if necessary.
AirGreen offers HVAC maintenance plans tailored to the urban environments of Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore .
Common Mistakes Avoided by AirGreen
-
Oversized capacity : short cycles, discomfort and overconsumption. We size to actual needs .
-
Incomplete cover : UV and birds damage the insulation; we closed each segment .
-
Insufficient drain slope : risk of overflow; we guarantee a constant slope and service access.
-
Direct support without anti-vibration : noise transmission to the balcony; our table receives suitable buffers .
-
Poorly sealed holes : air and water infiltration; our waterproof finishes protect the envelope.
Grants and Eligibility
Several Sharp Eco Inverters meet the energy efficiency criteria required by current programs. We support our customers in:
-
check technical eligibility (performance indices, cold capacity maintenance, Energy Star where applicable);
-
provide the AHRI number and detailed invoice;
-
coordinate deadlines and documentation .
What we deliver, beyond the device
Choosing AirGreen means benefiting from honest technical advice , a clean installation, and measurable monitoring: noise, performance, and consumption. Our team responds quickly throughout Greater Montreal and knows how to deal with the realities of co-ownership : schedules, access, standards, and aesthetics.
Need a wall-mounted heat pump on a balcony or facade? We install it on a table , on brackets or on a slab , favoring the shortest route , rigorous vacuuming and a waterproof finish . This approach ensures years of comfort for your condo in Rosemont , as elsewhere in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , on the North Shore and the South Shore .
