Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

Four-season comfort and careful installation: an HVAC system designed for a residential garage in Laval

At AirGreen , we carry out HVAC installations that combine performance, reliability and attention to detail. In Chomedey (Laval) , we have just installed a Sharp MultiZone heat pump – BU/TU series (R-32) , chosen for its stable performance in cold climates and its flexibility when it comes to serving two or three areas of the house. The context: an active residential garage (storage, tires, bicycle, electric vehicle), where we want a controlled temperature without encroaching on traffic or safety.

Why the Sharp BU/TU Multi-Zone Series?

The Sharp Multi-Zone BU/TU platform ( R-32 refrigerant) perfectly meets the needs of owners who want to consolidate multiple indoor heads onto a single outdoor condenser. Key benefits:

  • Inverter modulation to adjust power according to actual demand and limit consumption.

  • Extreme cold compatibility down to approximately −25°C , ideal for Greater Montreal .

  • Zoned distribution : you can air condition/heat the garage and one or two living areas (workshop, basement, upper floor) with a single outdoor unit.

  • Eco-responsibility : R-32 offers a lower GWP (global warming potential) than R-410A, which aligns with our energy efficiency commitments.

  • Eligibility for Quebec programs when performance criteria are met (frequent scenarios with modern heat pumps ).

Technical integration: compactness, safety and longevity

Positioning and support

We fix the outdoor unit to sturdy wall brackets anchored in the concrete column of the garage threshold. This positioning:

  • clears the ground for maintenance and vehicle traffic;

  • elevates the condenser to protect it from snow accumulation and splashes;

  • maintains proper air clearances for suction and discharge.

Anti-vibration pads reduce the transmission of structure-borne noise to the structure. The result: a quiet installation while remaining easily accessible for maintenance.

Refrigeration and electrical routing

The route of the refrigerant connections (insulated copper) and the communication cable is grouped in a vertical technical duct attached to the pillar. This choice:

  • protects pipes from shocks and UV rays;

  • facilitates inspections;

  • guarantees respected curvature radii for the longevity of the compressor.

On the power side, we connect the device to a dedicated circuit breaker , with a nearby disconnect box and waterproof conduit . Grounding and circuit breakers strictly follow the Quebec Electrical Code .

Condensate management and defrosting

Water is drained by gravity via a dedicated pipe, with a continuous slope to prevent freezing and odor return. In winter, the heat pump's defrost function produces water: our installation height and flow path prevent puddles when tires pass over them and stalactites under the sill.

Airflows and clearances

In a garage, we scrupulously respect:

  • sufficient rear clearance for suction;

  • a free discharge facing the propeller;

  • the absence of temporary obstacles (bags, wheels, crates) in the air corridor .
    We explain to the customer where not to store items, to preserve seasonal efficiency and avoid fan overloads.

Sizing and usage scenarios: Multi-Zone for comfort

Zone smart

The BU/TU configuration allows 2 to 3 wall heads to be powered. In this project, the garage constitutes a dedicated area ; other typical areas are:

  • workshop/basement : humidity and dust control;

  • floor : lower thermal load in the evening thanks to flexible settings.

Each indoor head has its own remote control and time slots , in order to avoid unnecessary air conditioning/heating of unoccupied areas.

Capacity and refrigeration lines

We calculate the equivalent lengths and height differences allowed by the manufacturer. The refrigerant charge is adjusted according to the total length . A poor estimate can penalize the oil recovery and the compressor's lifespan; this is why our technicians check:

  • suction/discharge pressures ;

  • superheating and subcooling temperatures ;

  • sealing by placing under nitrogen and deep vacuum test before releasing the refrigerant.

Results: immediate comfort, controlled noise, costs under control

  • Fast heating of the garage in winter, no more cold starts and tools outside the temperature range.

  • Sober air conditioning in summer, beneficial for the electric vehicle and sensitive materials (paints, glues, tires).

  • Controlled noise level , thanks to silent blocks , fan alignment and compliance with clearances.

  • Simplified HVAC maintenance : front access to the condenser and disconnect facilitates annual service (fin cleaning, electrical check, drain flushing).

Best practices and pitfalls to avoid (AirGreen feedback)

To do

  • Keep 60 to 90 cm free in front of the condenser front;

  • Clean the inner head filters every 4 to 8 weeks;

  • Rinse the condenser fins with a hose (gentle flow) in spring and fall;

  • Plan annual maintenance : checking the crawl space of the pipes, measuring currents , checking terminals and sensors .

To avoid

  • Stacking tires, bags or tools in the airflow;

  • Drill the technical duct without consulting us;

  • Hiding the condenser behind mesh that is too tight: even if it is “pretty”, this restricts the flow and increases consumption;

  • Let the condensate pipe freeze : if there is any doubt, we add a heating resistor or we reconfigure the slope .

Subsidies and Profitability: Where Sharp Stands in 2025

With R-32 generation and high seasonal efficiencies , the heat pump installed in Chomedey can be integrated into current energy-efficient programs when performance thresholds are met. We support our customers for:

  • validate eligibility (model, capacity, climates);

  • compile proof of installation (detailed invoices, photos, AHRI numbers where applicable);

  • maximize financial recovery in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore .

Your numbers

And at your place?

Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.

Before / afterThe cost of the same heat

Baseboards and electric furnaces turn 1 kWh of electricity into 1 kWh of heat. A heat pump delivers more: that is its COP. At Hydro-Québec’s rate D (11.142¢/kWh above 40 kWh a day, since 1 April 2026):

Before · baseboards11.142¢/kWh
After · heat pump–

Hydro-Québec: a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months.

    Frequently asked questions

    What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
    Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
    Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
    One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
    Where does the outdoor unit go?
    Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
    Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
    Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
    It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
    Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
    How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
    For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
    The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
    The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
    Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
    Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
    Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
    Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
