Carefully integrated into a modern condo: uncompromising four-season comfort
In a condo in Chomedey (Laval) , our team installed a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump to provide heating and cooling for an open living area (living room + dining area). The project is taking place on an upper floor, with patio doors opening onto a balcony and load-bearing gypsum walls already housing some technical reservations. The client's objective is clear: to obtain stable comfort all year round , reduce energy costs and preserve impeccable aesthetics inside and out.
Project context and choice of location
The chosen wall is located above the main opening of the living room. This position meets three essential criteria:
-
Uniform diffusion : overlooking the passage area, the interior head blows freely towards the main volume without being hindered by partition returns.
-
Short paths : the immediate proximity of the balcony allows a direct wall crossing to the outside for the refrigeration connections and the condensate drain, limiting pressure losses and optimizing efficiency.
-
Easy maintenance : the installation height (≈ 2.3–2.4 m ) leaves comfortable clearance for annual maintenance ( HVAC maintenance ).
We prepared precise reservations in the gypsum: a technical niche for the fittings and the passage of the line, a housing for the mounting plate and a main drilling (≈ 2-3 in) made with an outward slope for gravity drainage.
The Sharp indoor unit: efficiency, silence and finish
The Sharp wall-mounted head attracts attention with its sleek design and motorized shutter ensuring even air distribution. Comfort:
-
Inverter technology to modulate power according to actual demand.
-
High-efficiency filtration to reduce dust and allergens in the living room.
-
Low noise level in steady state, essential in a condo where sound reverberation can be noticeable.
Sharp offers this range in typical capacities from 9,000 to 24,000 BTU/h . In open-plan rooms like this, we generally prefer 12,000 to 15,000 BTU/h , subject to thermal load calculations (insulation, orientation, fenestration, airtightness). The precise adjustment of the capacity guarantees dehumidification in summer and efficient heating during the mid-seasons.
Installation details: clean, protected and durable
Route of the connections
From the head, the insulated refrigerant pipes (gas/liquid) and the communication cable take a very short route to the exterior wall (≈ 1.5 to 2.5 m in total). The connections are crimped, brazed if necessary and tested under nitrogen before being vacuum-packed.
Condensate drain
The gravity drain follows the same path as the connections, with a continuous slope towards the outside. This choice eliminates the need for a condensate pump, reduces potential noise and reduces maintenance .
Finishing and covering
On the outside, the connections are covered in discreet UV casing , matching the facade. Inside, we close and clean up : plate, joints, and sandblasting for a finish ready for painting. The client thus benefits from a virtually invisible integration of technical elements.
Testing and quality control
After deep vacuuming and leak testing , we measure the supply/return temperatures , check the pressures and adjust the settings (sweeping, speed, setpoint). Everything is documented on the intervention sheet, which is useful for monitoring annual HVAC maintenance .
Exterior and power supply: safety and compliance
Although the photo focuses on the interior, the complete installation includes:
-
A Sharp condenser placed on anti-vibration supports with clearances suitable for suction and blowing.
-
An external disconnect switch near the condenser, supplied by a dedicated circuit from the electrical panel (two-pole circuit breaker, sized according to capacity).
-
Strict management of the difference in level between the indoor unit and the condenser in order to respect the length/height limits prescribed by the manufacturer.
The whole is carried out under RBQ license , taking into account Quebec electrical standards and good HVAC practices in multi-residential environments.
Energy performance and program eligibility
The Sharp wall-mounted heat pump, in the R-32 refrigerant version, aims for a high efficiency rate (SEER/HSPF) and heat retention in sustained cold . In Greater Montreal, this equipment is fully part of a strategy to reduce energy bills in the face of advantageously priced electricity.
Grants and programs
When the configuration (capacity, certified performance, approval) meets the criteria, this type of heat pump may be eligible for various energy transition assistance programs. Our team supports customers in verifying eligibility and preparing documents .
Challenges encountered and AirGreen solutions
-
Proximity to carpentry
The head is installed between a patio door and a window . We adjusted the wall plate to the millimeter to maintain lateral clearances and prevent air from flowing back against the embrasures. -
Technical walls already drilled
Several pre-existing renovation openings were visible. We restructured the niche , streamlined the passage of the connections and secured the mounting plate to the uprights to prevent any vibration . -
High-rise condo
The work is carried out on the upper floor: safe management of the facade crossings , protection of the coatings and minimization of interventions on the co-ownership . We coordinate the logistics in order to limit the intervention time in the common areas.
Result: immediate comfort, preserved aesthetics
-
Stable comfort 12 months/12 : efficient heating in spring/autumn and gentle air conditioning in summer.
-
Silence : very discreet low mode, ideal for condo life.
-
Clean aesthetics : no visible interior chute, discreet exterior cover .
-
Efficiency : short journeys = optimized performance and lower consumption .
Tips for use and maintenance to maximize lifespan
-
Filters : clean every 4 to 8 weeks during the usage season.
-
Clearances : Do not install a tablet directly in front of the head; leave a free space for scanning.
-
Instructions : aim for reasonable differences (20–23°C summer; 21–23°C winter) to promote Inverter modulation.
-
Annual HVAC maintenance : condensate inspection, tightening of connections , checking of settings and deep cleaning of the evaporator and condenser.
-
Winter : Keep the condenser clear of snow and ice.
