A neat exterior installation on a brick facade, designed for Montreal's climate
In this typical Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie plex, our team installed aSharp wall-mounted heat pump to provide four-season comfort while respecting the building's architecture. The outdoor unit is located on the rear balcony, along a brick wall in very good condition. We favored a discreet, stable, and efficient installation, with optimized air clearances to maintain energy efficiency in all seasons.
Context and objectives of the project
The owner wanted:
-
Replace an energy-consuming portable air conditioner with a sustainable HVAC solution ;
-
Reduce your electricity bill in winter heating mode;
-
Limit the visual impact of equipment on a shared backyard;
-
Minimize noise for the neighborhood, especially in the evening.
We focused the project on a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump (recent range with R-32 refrigerant ), renowned for its reliability in cold climates , its low noise levels and its precise modulation thanks to Inverter technology . The objective: stable comfort, summer and winter, without compromising on aesthetics or the tranquility of the premises.
Outdoor installation: stability, airflow and service access
On Montreal brick balconies, the choice of support determines durability. Here, we installed the condenser on level galvanized wall brackets , firmly anchored in the sound brick after controlled percussion and the use of suitable anchors (high-strength mechanical plugs). This installation:
-
Lifts the unit off the decking to ensure drainage and prevent snow accumulation;
-
Maintains side and rear clearances that meet manufacturer specifications;
-
Reduces vibration transmission thanks to anti-vibration pads inserted between the equipment and the supports;
-
Facilitates maintenance (access to front and sides, winter defrosting, exchanger cleaning).
Positioning under the roof overhang limits direct exposure to precipitation while maintaining free ventilation of the condenser. We took care to orient the unit so as not to blow towards the balcony passageways in order to preserve the comfort of the occupants .
Drilling, connections and finishing: clean and durable
For this brick plex, we made a single 2-1/2" penetration with a weatherstripping sleeve and closed -cell foam to seal the penetration. The refrigerant lines (insulated copper), the communication cable and the power supply are grouped in a discreet exterior casing , waterproof, UV-resistant, frost-resistant and impact-resistant. The route is short and straight between the outdoor unit and the indoor head in order to:
-
Reduce pressure losses and preserve capacity;
-
Minimize apparent lengths and visual impact;
-
Simplify future inspection operations.
Inside, the condensate is drained by gravity to the outside, which avoids the addition of a pump (a wearing part) and limits maintenance. The external disconnect and the line dedicated to the panel are sized according to the nominal loads and installed in accordance with RBQ/CCQ requirements.
Cold Climate Performance: A Sharp Advantage
Sharp R-32 generation wall-mounted heat pumps offer:
-
High efficiency (SEER/HSPF) thanks to the inverter compressor;
-
Reliable heating in negative temperatures (intelligent frost management and optimized defrost cycles);
-
A reduced noise level on the condenser side and on the interior head side, ideal for typical Montreal backyards where the proximity of neighbors is to be considered;
-
Effective air filtration and treatment at the head (high-density filters; purification options depending on the series).
Result: a significant reduction in operating costs compared to electric baseboards and appreciable thermal stability during thaws or prolonged cold spells.
Salient technical details of the installation
-
Support : galvanized wall brackets, solid brick mechanical anchor, anti-vibration pads.
-
Clearances : respect the manufacturer's distances at the rear and front for unobstructed airflow .
-
Connections : short length, brazed weld under nitrogen, nitrogen leak test then deep vacuum (<500 microns) before gassing .
-
Power supply : dedicated circuit breaker, UV outdoor cable, accessible disconnect box , clear circuit identification.
-
Finishes : clean cover, silicone seals at the interfaces, straight alignments, stainless steel fixings.
-
Commissioning : checking pressures , evaporation/condensation temperatures, compressor intensity, and calibration of the blowing blades on the inner head side.
Nuisance management and good practices in residential environments
We favor short test periods that are communicated to the occupants to avoid disturbances . The orientation of the unit and the installation on pads limit vibrations on the masonry. During the winter period, we recommend:
-
Clearing snow around the condenser (minimum 30–45 cm);
-
The removal of objects that can recycle air (bins, balcony furniture);
-
An annual maintenance program (battery cleaning, charge control, condensate test).
HVAC Maintenance: The Recipe for Longevity
Simple and regular preventive maintenance extends the life of the heat pump:
-
Clean the inner head filters every 4 to 8 weeks during use.
-
Visual inspection of the cowling and fasteners after high winds.
-
Gentle rinsing of the condenser in spring to remove dust and salts.
-
Annual AirGreen inspection : checking pressures, sealing, electrical connections, condensate, firmware update (when relevant).
Grants and local compliance
Depending on the specific model and its performance rating, this type of equipment may be eligible for provincial and municipal energy efficiency programs . We support our clients in:
-
Eligibility assessment (required returns, documentation);
-
The assembly of installation files and proofs;
-
Any inspections .
The criteria are evolving; we validate each file at the time of ordering to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
What the customer gains in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie
-
Four-season comfort in a Montreal home with high thermal inertia;
-
Energy savings in heating compared to baseboards;
-
Discreet integration on the brick facade, respecting the aesthetics of the plex;
-
Silence and reliability , a guarantee of peace and quiet for neighbors and occupants;
-
A local AirGreen service , already present in Montreal, Laval, South Shore and North Shore .
Our AirGreen difference
We combine field engineering and meticulous execution : study of routes, calculation of lengths, choice of supports according to the masonry support, and careful finishing. Each project is delivered with functional testing , usage advice , and after-sales follow-up so that performance remains at the rendezvous throughout the seasons.
Warning
Technical and grant eligibility information may vary depending on the model installed and current programs. Our recommendations take into account RBQ/CCQ standards and local HVAC best practices.
