An optimized Montreal balcony: a compact, quiet HVAC installation designed for extreme cold
Our installation method in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie
At AirGreen , we design each HVAC installation to integrate with Montreal's buildings without compromising on comfort or durability. Here, we installed a Sharp ZHU1 wall-mounted heat pump on the rear balcony of a red brick plex. The goal: to provide efficient four-season heating/cooling, maintain air circulation on a narrow balcony, and meet acoustic and neighborhood requirements.
Project background
-
Building : Typical Montreal plex apartment with narrow rear balcony and side privacy screen.
-
Constraints : limited space, brick facade, close proximity, condensation management, winter protection.
-
Customer expectations : stable summer/winter comfort, quiet sound, neat aesthetics, easy maintenance.
Equipment selection: Sharp ZHU1, recent series with R-32 refrigerant
The Sharp ZHU1 belongs to the new generation of wall-mounted units that operate with R-32 , a refrigerant with a lower global warming potential than R-410A. This series is known for:
-
high energy efficiency in air conditioning and heating;
-
reliability in cold weather (operating range adapted to the Montreal climate);
-
management electronics that stabilize temperatures and limit air variations;
-
a compact footprint ideal for balconies and narrow passages.
Typical capacities in this series: 12,000 to 18,000 BTU configurations for standard Montreal homes. We always size the unit based on the surface area, envelope, and internal inputs to ensure optimal part-load operation.
Integration on balcony: structure, clearances and acoustics
-
Raised support : installation of the outdoor unit on an aluminum base anchored to the balcony slab . This elevation protects against water and snow and makes cleaning easier.
-
Air clearances : calculated positioning to maintain a setback at the rear and a clear field at the front and side , despite the privacy screen. Result: stable air circulation, limited risks of recirculation and preserved efficiency.
-
Anti-vibration : silent blocks under the device and spacers on the structure to reduce vibration transmission to the masonry and the guardrail.
-
Acoustics : By choosing the blowing axis facing the balcony opening, we reduce the perceived noise impact. The heat pump operates in continuous regulation (inverter), which maintains soft sound levels at partial load, favorable to the neighborhood.
Refrigeration and finishing
-
Short and direct traverse : the living room opening onto the balcony allows for a reduced refrigeration path between the indoor head and the condenser, limiting pressure losses and improving seasonal efficiency.
-
Neat capping : vertical routing in a brown protective cover matching the brickwork for discreet integration. The capping protects the insulation, refrigeration lines, and wiring from UV rays and shocks.
-
Condensate management : gravity drainage with controlled slope to the designated discharge point, to avoid any backflow, splashing on facades or ice formation in winter.
-
Electricity : external disconnect switch installed near the unit, on a dedicated support, in accordance with the Quebec Construction Code . The circuit is dedicated to the HVAC system for selective protection and safe maintenance.
Special features of a narrow balcony: our technical answers
-
Access security : service space retained at the front and side for future maintenance (defrosting, battery cleaning, diagnostics).
-
Winter protection : Sufficient height under the appliance to prevent snow accumulation and ensure drainage without icicles. The positioning also protects against snow drifts generated by prevailing winds in backyards.
-
Rainwater : check runoff and slab slopes to prevent stagnation under the device.
Why the Sharp ZHU1 is suitable for Montreal's plex park
-
Compactness : fits in without taking up space on the balcony or obstructing traffic lanes.
-
Efficiency : fine modulation of the compressor, significant energy savings compared to all-or-nothing systems.
-
4-season comfort : precise cooling in summer and reliable heating at low temperatures, suitable for winters in Montreal , Laval and Longueuil , as well as the North Shore and South Shore areas.
-
Simplified maintenance : immediate access to the indoor unit disconnect switch, connections and filters for HVAC maintenance visits.
Key steps of our intervention
-
Thermal and acoustic survey of the site : measurements, release points, perceived noise scenarios according to orientation.
-
Route design : choice of drilling point, capping plan, estimation of refrigeration length and cabling.
-
Preparation : anchoring the raised structure with sealing adapted to the slab; installation of silent blocks .
-
Drilling and sealing : clean drilling, vapor barrier and finishing to preserve the waterproofing of the envelope.
-
Connections : brazing, vacuum drawing, leak tests, loading and settings according to manufacturer tolerances.
-
Power on : check polarities, currents and communication; test in summer/winter modes.
-
Delivery to the customer : instructions for use, maintenance schedule, best practices for longevity.
Recommended maintenance
-
Clean the inner head filters at regular intervals to maintain airflow.
-
Wash the external battery in spring to remove dust and pollen.
-
Annual inspection by our technicians: electrical checks, tightening, pressures, probes, condition of insulation and capping.
-
Winter Clearance : Keep the unit clear of snow drifts to preserve defrost cycles.
Result for the customer
-
Stable and consistent comfort in the main rooms.
-
Noise discretion noticeable on the balcony and from adjacent neighbors.
-
Aesthetics harmonized with the masonry thanks to the brown capping and the compactness of the unit.
-
Clear maintenance access to extend system life and preserve seasonal performance.
Grants and Compliance
Depending on the exact configuration, year of manufacture and performance, this type of R-32 wall-mounted heat pump may be eligible for certain current financial assistance programs. We assist our clients in verifying criteria , preparing documents and validating compliance (RBQ, electrical standards, neighborhood acoustics).
