A narrow balcony transformed into a high-performance, quiet and compliant technical space
At AirGreen , we adapt each HVAC installation to the architectural realities of Greater Montreal. In this Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie plex, we integrated a Sharp ZHU1 wall-mounted heat pump on a narrow rear balcony, with pedestrian access, a privacy screen, and a brick façade. The goal: to ensure reliable heating in winter, gentle cooling in summer, and discreet operation for the neighborhood.
What location dictates…and how we respond
A narrow balcony requires specific choices: air clearances , service access, condensate drainage and acoustic control. We have:
-
Raised the outdoor unit on an aluminum base anchored in the slab, to protect it from puddles and snow and to facilitate cleaning;
-
Direct the blowing towards the open area of the balcony, in order to limit any risk of air recirculation against the privacy screen and to preserve air conditioning and defrosting performance;
-
Placed silent blocks under each support point to break the vibration transmission to the structure and the masonry;
-
Planned a clear service area at the front and side for maintenance (pressure gauges, battery washing, electrical tests).
Short refrigeration path, minimized losses
The interior head is located on the courtyard side, which allows:
-
a single, clean, watertight hole in the brick;
-
a reduced refrigeration length , a guarantee of better seasonal performance and temperature stability;
-
a brown vertical capping matching the facade, which protects the refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the power supply from UV , shocks and bad weather.
Condensate management: gravity as an ally
On balconies, condensates must be controlled:
-
Gravity flow with continuous slope, to avoid backflow and splashing on the facade or sidewalk;
-
Authorized and discreet discharge point, far from traffic and freezing areas in winter;
-
Check drain insulation to prevent icicle formation in very cold weather.
Power supply and safety
We installed an external disconnect switch in the immediate vicinity of the unit, on a dedicated support, respecting the requirements of the Quebec Construction Code . The circuit is dedicated to the HVAC system, with a rating and protection adapted to the Sharp ZHU1 . This arrangement:
-
secures maintenance interventions;
-
reduces voltage drops;
-
simplifies diagnosis in the event of an anomaly.
Why the Sharp ZHU1 for a Montreal plex
The Sharp ZHU1 (new generation at R-32 ) is distinguished by:
-
precise inverter modulation : the machine adjusts its power to the actual need, limiting on/off cycles and perceived noise;
-
reliable low-temperature heating , suitable for winters in Montreal , Laval and Longueuil , as well as the North Shore and South Shore sectors;
-
a compact footprint : ideal for balconies and walkways in plexes;
-
electronics that stabilize the ambient temperature without aggressive air blasts.
We systematically size the capacity (e.g. 12,000 or 18,000 BTU) based on a load reading: surfaces, insulation, infiltration, orientation, use of rooms. Correct sizing avoids overconsumption and ensures quiet operation at partial load .
Controlled noise, preserved comfort
In densely populated areas, sound discretion is crucial. Our measures:
-
Silent blocks and torque tightening to neutralize parasitic vibrations;
-
Respect the clearances so that the fan works without back pressure;
-
Direction of the breath so that the aerodynamic noise dissipates towards the balcony opening.
The result: a discreet daily presence, in keeping with the spirit of the alleys and backyards of Rosemont.
Winter: think about defrosting
Defrost cycles require unobstructed airflow and water drainage:
-
Sufficient elevation to avoid snowdrifts ;
-
Drain route designed to avoid freezing at the base;
-
No winter cover on the unit in operation (prohibited, as it blocks the exchange).
Waterproofing and respect for the brick
The brick must remain sound:
-
Drilling carried out with sleeve and vapor barrier ;
-
Interior/exterior sealing to prevent moisture migration;
-
Cleanly sealed capping , without visual overload on the facade.
AirGreen process: clear, fast, controlled
-
Technical visit and assessment of constraints (clearances, noise, possible evacuations).
-
Choice of equipment in recent series performing well in the cold.
-
Layout plan : footprint, anchors, refrigeration/electrical routing.
-
Installation : anchoring the base, drilling, brazing, vacuum drawing, leak testing, powering up .
-
Summer/winter functional tests , verification of intensities, configuration.
-
Delivery to the customer : instructions for use, HVAC maintenance schedule, seasonal best practices.
Maintenance: the essentials for longevity
-
Internal filters : regular dusting to maintain air flow;
-
External battery : gentle wash in spring;
-
Annual inspection by our technicians: pressures, probes, connections, condition of insulation, tightening;
-
Clear snow around the base to allow defrosting to drain away.
Subsidies and Regulation
Depending on the exact performance and year of manufacture, this R-32 heat pump may be eligible for assistance programs. We assist our clients in verifying criteria, preparing files, and ensuring regulatory compliance (RBQ, electrical standards, neighborhood acoustics, building and condominium guidelines).
What the customer gains
-
Consistent and stable 4-season comfort ;
-
Energy savings through modulation;
-
Discreet integration on the balcony, without obstructing traffic;
-
Maintenance made easy by clear access and protected cabling.
We operate throughout Greater Montreal — Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , North Shore and South Shore — with the same requirement: a clean site, clean finishes and lasting performance.
