Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Nuns' Island
In Île-des-Sœurs, AirGreen installs a Sharp ZU1 on an aluminum support with anti-vibration pads: discreet, silent and winter-ready HVAC installation . Serving Greater Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , North Shore , South Shore .

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.
Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.
Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.
The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.
Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.
A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.
The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.
On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.
The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.
Clean and quiet integration on a modern facade: the AirGreen method for four-season comfort
Project context: recent condo with architectural panel facade
On Nuns' Island , many newer buildings are adopting metal or composite panel facades, concrete balconies, and carefully designed access points. Our client, located on the ground floor of a condo, wanted a compact solution that would provide summer air conditioning and efficient supplemental heating in winter, without compromising the building's aesthetics or the neighborhood's tranquility. We chose the Sharp wall-mounted heat pump ( ZU1 series, new-generation refrigerant) for its acoustic simplicity, air filtration, and stability in cold weather—a real plus for Greater Montreal .
The reasons for choosing the Sharp ZU1 for the Montreal metropolitan area
Performance and reliability
-
Inverter compressor intelligently modulates power to maintain a stable temperature, reduce start-ups and optimize consumption .
-
Low GWP refrigerant ( R-32 family for the ZU1 series) more environmentally friendly than older generations.
-
Useful heating capacity in cold weather, suitable for winters in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , as well as the North Shore and South Shore areas.
Air quality and comfort
-
Plasmacluster purification technology: limitation of suspended particles and odors, beneficial in urban condos where air renewal is sometimes limited.
-
Fine regulation, progressive fan speed, reduced noise level to preserve the peace and quiet of occupants and neighbors.
The AirGreen installation: precise, durable and reversible
Outdoor installation on raised support
The condensing unit is installed on a raised , perfectly level aluminum support . We insert anti-vibration pads under each foot: this interface mechanically decouples the unit from the slab and limits solid transmissions. Three concrete benefits:
-
Increased silence inside and outside;
-
Sufficient clearance for condensation water and winter defrosting ;
-
Protection against dirt and light blown snow.
The modern facade positioning, near a door and a control box, complies with regulatory clearances for suction and blowing. The overall effect remains discreet and consistent with the condo's architecture.
Refrigeration and electrical routing
-
Back-to-back configuration with refrigerant connections (HVAC insulated copper) over short distances to minimize losses and optimize responsiveness .
-
Single hole through the wall, watertight sleeve and careful sealing to maintain the integrity of the air barrier.
-
Calibrated flares, tightening with a torque meter , deep vacuum (< 500 microns) then opening of the valves: this is the sequence which guarantees long-term reliability .
-
Dedicated power supply compliant with the Canadian Electrical Code , suitable circuit breaker and accessible external circuit breaker.
Condensate management
The concrete terrace facilitates gravity drainage. Elevating the unit prevents accumulation under the base during defrost cycles, reducing the risk of ice. In areas exposed to river winds, we validate the orientation of the blowing to prevent any recycling of hot air in summer.
Sizing: the right capacity for a condo on Île-des-Sœurs
For a main living space of 450 to 800 sq ft , the power range is generally between 9,000 and 15,000 BTUs for air conditioning, depending on exposure, insulation, glass area and occupancy. The Sharp ZU1 series covers these needs (sizes available up to 24,000 BTUs). At AirGreen, we systematically validate:
-
Solar gains linked to southwest-facing glazing, which is very common on the island;
-
Infiltration rate of woodwork;
-
Actual use of rooms (open area vs. closed rooms).
The inverter control then absorbs the variations, avoiding short cycles which degrade hygrometric comfort.
Site constraints and solutions applied
1) Architectural facade and aesthetic requirements
On a gray panel facade, every opening is visible. We favor a compact layout and a neat finish: caps, uniform seals, and stainless steel fasteners. The aluminum support visually harmonizes with the facade and remains easy to clean.
2) Controlled noise pollution
Condominiums often impose dB(A) thresholds. The ZU1 heat pump operates at low speed most of the time thanks to the inverter ; the anti-vibration pads + a fan imbalance control ensure a very soft sound signature , perceptible only in the immediate vicinity.
3) Riverside climate and sea spray
The proximity of the St. Lawrence River exposes certain equipment to humidity and salt spray. We apply treated fasteners , flow management that avoids stagnant areas, and HVAC maintenance recommendations to preserve the exchangers .
Result: comfort, energy efficiency and perfect integration
After instrumented commissioning (evaporation/condensation temperature readings, intensities, superheating/subcooling), the ZU1 delivers stable and uniform cooling in summer, and economical additional heating in mid-seasons and even in winter depending on the size chosen. Occupants benefit from filtered air and quiet operation. The outdoor unit, aligned and unobstructed, fits neatly into the doorway.
AirGreen Best Practices for Modern Condos
Choosing the outdoor location
-
Leave 30–40 cm free in front of the grille for suction;
-
Avoid recesses that encourage the recycling of hot air ;
-
Provide a raised base for maintenance and ice melting.
Healing the connections
-
Reduced length = better efficiency and less fluid used;
-
Continuous line insulation, large bend radii, watertight joints .
Recommended HVAC maintenance
-
Cleaning the inner head filters every 4–6 weeks during use;
-
Gentle rinsing of the external battery (no high pressure);
-
Annual maintenance : electrical check, inspection of exchangers, pressure/temperature readings, adjustments if necessary.
Grants and Eligibility
Recent high-efficiency R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps may be eligible for assistance programs (depending on current technical criteria, cold weather performance and installation certification). We support our customers in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , North Shore and South Shore to validate eligibility, prepare documents and submit applications.
Wall-mounted or multi-zone heat pump: how to decide?
-
Single-piece (single wall) : ideal for a main open area, low investment, quick work.
-
Multi-zone : relevant if you want to treat several rooms (bedrooms, office). In a compact condo, a well-sized wall unit is often sufficient for 80–90% of needs, with a door and air circulation strategy .

And at your place?
Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.
Baseboards and electric furnaces turn 1 kWh of electricity into 1 kWh of heat. A heat pump delivers more: that is its COP. At Hydro-Québec’s rate D (11.142¢/kWh above 40 kWh a day, since 1 April 2026):
Hydro-Québec: a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months.
Estimate per kWh of heat, at the chosen temperature, using the certified COP from the product page. Taxes, access charge and backup heat not included.
Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.
