Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

An HVAC project in a typical Montreal plex

At AirGreen , we regularly carry out installations in apartment buildings in downtown Montreal. These red brick buildings, often called plexes, have specific features that require in-depth expertise in HVAC installation . Recently, we completed the installation of two Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pumps in a duplex in the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie neighborhood.

This project illustrates well the challenges associated with Montreal buildings: exterior masonry walls, lack of significant lateral margins, and the need to maintain aesthetics while guaranteeing the performance and reliability of equipment.

Features of the Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump

The Sharp ZU1 range is renowned for its reliability and energy efficiency. Each installed unit offers a capacity of 12,000 BTU , suitable for ensuring the comfort of an average-sized home. Its main advantages:

  • DC inverter technology ensuring smooth modulation and energy savings.

  • Heating capacity down to -25°C , which is essential for the harsh winters of Montreal, Laval and the North Shore.

  • Energy efficiency (high SEER2 and HSPF2) , allowing you to reduce electricity costs while enjoying stable comfort.

  • Eligibility for LogisVert and federal subsidies for residential installations.

Technical challenges and solutions provided

Drilling through brick walls

One of the main challenges was the passage of refrigerant and electrical connections through thick masonry walls . Our technicians carried out a careful drilling, with a slightly inclined angle to promote gravity drainage of condensates.

Organization of external units

The two Sharp condensers were mounted on sturdy wall brackets to maximize space and keep the floor clear. This configuration protects the units from snow and water accumulation on the ground, an important factor in a climate like Montreal's.

Wiring and capping

The connections were protected by neutral-colored capping , harmonizing with the brick facade. All the wiring is tidy, thus avoiding any aesthetic disturbance and ensuring increased durability.

Condensate drainage

Each indoor unit has been connected to a gravity drainage system , eliminating the need for a sump pump and reducing the risk of long-term maintenance.

Results and benefits for occupants

From the moment they were put into service, both dwellings benefited from constant thermal comfort , summer and winter. The occupants immediately noted:

  • A reduction in heat accumulated in summer in rooms exposed to the sun.

  • Efficient and economical heating in winter, advantageously replacing old electric convectors.

  • Quiet operation of indoor and outdoor units, ensuring peace of mind.

Additionally, thanks to the Energy Star certified performance of the Sharp ZU1 range, residents will be able to access significant subsidies , significantly reducing the total cost of the project.
