An HVAC project carried out on a flat roof in the heart of Montreal
At AirGreen , we are often called upon to work in urban contexts where flat roofs dominate the architecture of plexes and residential buildings typical of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie . It is in this context that we recently installed a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump , a new generation device operating with R-32 refrigerant, perfectly suited to Quebec winters.
A Sharp ZU1 heat pump designed for Montreal's climate
The Sharp ZU1 is a wall-mounted heat pump known for its ability to maintain stable performance down to -25°C , while offering excellent energy efficiency during the summer. Available in configurations from 12,000 to 24,000 BTU , it provides economical heating and cooling for typical Montreal homes, whether condos, duplexes or triplexes.
This installation adds to the long list of projects carried out by AirGreen using the Sharp ZU1 models, which are increasingly popular for their compatibility with the Hydro-Québec LogisVert and Maisons Plus Vertes grant programs.
Technical details of the installation
In this project, the outdoor condenser was installed on the flat roof of the building, a common practice in dense neighborhoods like Rosemont where floor space is limited. The unit was mounted on raised metal supports , resting on a treated wood base to ensure stability and protection against vibrations.
-
Unit type: wall-mounted heat pump (mini-split)
-
Make and model: Sharp ZU1 (R-32)
-
Installed power: 18,000 BTU (ideal for an average-sized home)
-
Installation: on flat roof, with raised supports and stabilization boards
-
Drainage: provided by gravity, thanks to the natural slope of the roof
-
Refrigerated path: vertical crossing via a technical exit on the roof
This configuration ensures good ventilation of the outdoor unit while protecting it from the risks associated with the accumulation of snow or ice at ground level.
Construction site challenges and AirGreen solutions
Installation on a flat roof requires special attention:
-
Stability: We used a robust support system, capable of withstanding the strong winds common in the Montreal area.
-
Technical access: the intervention required the installation of a secure passage to route the piping and cabling to the indoor unit.
-
Future maintenance: we have provided easy and clear access so that HVAC maintenance operations are quick and safe.
Result: optimized comfort and energy savings
Thanks to this installation, the owner now benefits from:
-
stable heating in winter, even during the extreme cold of January,
-
efficient and quiet air conditioning in summer,
-
a significant reduction in its energy bill,
-
and a system eligible for the subsidy programs in effect on the Island of Montreal and the South/North Shore.
