Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension
Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in a condo in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension: careful integration, R-32 performance and AirGreen support for HVAC subsidies and maintenance.

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.
Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.
Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.
The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.
Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.
A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.
The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.
On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.
The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.
Four-season comfort and discreet finishing in a Montreal condo
At AirGreen , we design HVAC installations designed for Montreal 's urban realities. This project in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension perfectly illustrates our approach: a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in a living room–living area configuration, carefully integrated to preserve aesthetics and optimize air circulation.
Project context and performance objectives
The owner wanted:
-
A unique solution for winter supplementary heating and summer air conditioning , quiet and economical.
-
Clean integration, without invasive cable ducts or visible cables.
-
A recent machine, R-32 , eligible for subsidies and efficient down to −25°C .
The Sharp ZU1 meets these criteria thanks to its Energy Star efficiency , its power range (12,000 to 24,000 BTU) and its compact design which fits harmoniously above circulation spaces.
Technical choice: why the Sharp ZU1?
-
Low GWP R-32 refrigerant , better environmental performance than R-410A.
-
Stable inverter compressor , reducing on/off cycles and energy bills.
-
Reliable heating in bitter cold (down to -25°C) and even blowing thanks to the motorized shutter.
-
Low noise level , ideal for open living areas.
-
Compatibility with subsidies (programs in Quebec) thanks to high seasonal yields.
Interior layout: precision and air circulation
We position the head at the top of the wall , centered on the living area, in order to:
-
Clear the air jet and avoid recirculation against the molded ceiling.
-
Effectively cover the length of the room and the passage area to the kitchen/bedrooms.
-
Facilitate access for periodic HVAC maintenance (filters, evaporator cleaning).
A discreet vertical technical passage protects the connections, with a tone-on-tone finish to visually disappear near the lacquered furniture and full-height mirrors.
Route of connections and management of condensates
-
Unique drilling with adjusted diameter, sealed and insulated to stop thermal bridges.
-
Insulated copper refrigeration lines , controlled slope, bend radius respected to protect the compressor.
-
Gravity-fed condensates during air conditioning season, with anti-odor siphon, without risk of backflow.
-
Minimalist interior capping , connected to a short technical duct on the exterior side for a clean facade.
Outdoor unit and support
The Sharp ZU1 series outdoor unit is installed on an anti-vibration support with clearances as follows:
-
Rear and lateral deflection for free air sweeping and effective defrosting.
-
Anti-vibration feet limiting transmission to the balcony and the metal structure.
-
Electrical wiring in waterproof conduit to the external cut-off box, calibrated to the dedicated circuit breaker .
Commissioning: AirGreen rigor
-
Nitrogen test and leak test.
-
High vacuum (microns verified) to remove moisture and non-condensables.
-
Refrigerant top-up if actual length exceeds factory charge, according to Sharp charts.
-
Settings (auto mode, initial setpoint, oscillation) and electrical checks .
-
Submission of a commissioning report with photos and values (pressure, blowing temperature).
Measured results and perceived comfort
-
Cool and stable blowing temperature in air conditioning mode, rapid heating increase during the inter-season.
-
Low noise level in automatic speed, no perceptible vibration in the partition.
-
Uniformity of temperature thanks to the orientation of the shutter and the clear placement of furniture.
Grants and return on investment
The selected heat pump , recent and Energy Star , is eligible for active programs in Quebec. The entire Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore, South Shore benefits from support that we manage: choice of supporting documents, compliance photos, serial numbers and installation certificates . On a typical condo usage basis, the annual savings on air conditioning and heating contribute to an interesting ROI , while improving the resale value.
Good practices for use and maintenance
-
Maintain a constant setpoint (rather than daily amplitudes) to take advantage of the Inverter.
-
Clean the filters every 4 to 6 weeks during the usage season.
-
Schedule annual HVAC maintenance : evaporator/condenser cleaning, condensate check, electrical tightening.
-
In winter, clear the outside air intake of snow and frost.
-
Avoid obstructing the blowing with curtains or tall cabinets.
Common pitfalls to avoid in Montreal condos
-
Lack of clearance around the outdoor unit: reduced efficiency and more frequent defrost cycles.
-
Too long routes or tight bends: pressure losses and fluid noise.
-
Drain without slope : risk of droplets and traces on the wall.
-
Electrical connection on shared circuit : safety and compliance compromised.
Why entrust your project to AirGreen?
We combine:
-
Realistic load studies (m², orientation, insulation, infiltration).
-
Selection of recent devices : Sharp, Fujitsu, Gree, Midea28 and other R-32/R-454B ranges.
-
RBQ certified installation , compliance with co-ownership standards and regulations.
-
After-sales follow-up and HVAC maintenance contracts covering Montreal, Laval , Longueuil , North Shore and South Shore .
This Sharp ZU1 installation demonstrates that a wall-mounted air conditioner/heat pump can elegantly integrate into a Montreal condo while offering long-lasting performance and controlled operating costs.
How it goes, from the first call to the end
The main steps of this kind of job at AirGreen. Every house has its quirks: the estimate brings them out.
We look at the room, the outside wall, the line route and where the outdoor unit will go. That is where the capacity gets chosen.
Model, capacity and price, in writing. We also check whether the model qualifies for assistance programs.
Floors and furniture protected, wall plate position marked level, wall opening located.
A single opening, with the slope the drain needs to flow outside.
Set on a stand raised above the snow, with the clearances the manufacturer requires.
Connected, insulated and protected. The opening is then sealed against water, cold air and insects.
A dedicated circuit and an accessible disconnect near the outdoor unit.
Leak test, vacuum, then start-up and a check of heating and cooling.
Remote, modes, filters: we show you the essentials before we leave.

And at your place?
Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.
Baseboards and electric furnaces turn 1 kWh of electricity into 1 kWh of heat. A heat pump delivers more: that is its COP. At Hydro-Québec’s rate D (11.142¢/kWh above 40 kWh a day, since 1 April 2026):
Hydro-Québec: a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months.
Estimate per kWh of heat, at the chosen temperature, using the certified COP from the product page. Taxes, access charge and backup heat not included.
Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.
